Hi all, I am running windows XP home edi. on a Dell Dual core 2.66mHZ ,1004 mb memory , 256 mb graphics card and a 200 GB HD ( Dell dimensions 5150 ). Soon after I start up, and windows has been loaded a Box titled - Svchost.exe application error. - The instruction at "0x745f2780" referrenced at "0x00000000" could not be read. The memory could not be "read". -Click on OK to terminate program/ Click on cancel to debug the program. If I click cancel the computer carries on and repeats the same message in about 5 mins , and soon after the look of windows tool bar across the bottom of the screen changes. If I click on OK the computer freezes and has to switched off at the mains, to restart it and begin the process again. Also a microsoft reporting box opens saying - generic host process for WIN32 services has encounter a problem and needs to close…………. It then offers to report to microsoft but gives no solution. Any help gratefully received. Jimmi39 :wtf: PS: Windows live messanger installed
Hi jimmi39,

Most likely an operating system file has become corrupted or has gone missing.

Run your Windows File Protection System File Checker.

Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - Enter

have your SP2 disk handy for SFC to copy and replace any missing or corrupt OS files.

Next most likely, would be a recently installed application software, like an IM or browser add-on.
Installed anything recently?

Possible Next step would address Hard Drive problems
Run CHECK DISK from your Recovery Console.

Check Disk in XP

Set the order to boot from the CD Rom 1st and the Hard drive 2nd.

Put your Windows CD in the tray, then "Exit with Saving" the settings (far right tab)

1. Boot with your windows CD
It will take some time as the CD loads various files

2. Type R to Enter the Recovery Console
3. Enter the Administrator password (if there is one)
4. Type: chkdsk c: /r and press Enter << 5. Once completed (if no errors of unrecovery) Type: chkdsk c: /p and press Enter
6. Type: fixboot c: and press Enter
You’ll get a script asking if you are sure you wish to write a new boot sector to C:, Type y (for yes)
You’ll get a script stating that a new boot sector has been written.

7. At the prompt, type (exit) to Boot Normally

In the event that the above suggestions do not help, consider a Repair Installation of XP, from your Recovery Console.

Keep us posted with your progress, as other Members may learn from your solution.

Best Regards
Hi, Thanks for the suggestions, but before you replied I had downloaded the latest window updates, and the problem went away. I do not know if this was a coincidence, or if it sorted the problems. Cheers Jimmi39 :D
