Why would the system insist running a file check a faultless file system? Every nor and then I also get an error message about a program that would not close. This message includes dwwin.exe and some reference to Adobe Acrobat. I tried to reinstall Acrobat, but it didn't help. The check isn't not run systematically at each boot-up, but all too often. Maybe 80% of the time. I run Ad-aware Registry Mechanic periodically and have Panda virus and firewall security installed and running all the time. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this? —ekv
Couple of things influencing your situation here.

First, dwwin.exe is a legitimate part of the Windows Operating System, and functions to assist Error Reporting. ( You may have received a "popup" stating that Windows has had to terminate (some program) because of an unresolveable error……Do you wish to send an Error Report to Microsoft. )

I'm not saying that you are currently getting that "popup" invitation to send the Error Report to Microsoft. Rather, in the general course of operating with XP, most users eventually come across such a situation. And dwwin.exe is the executable that makes it possible. (some people decide to "turn off" error reporting. It's up to you.) So……. dwwin.exe is apparently "alerting" to a possible glitch in your operating system.

Run Windows File Protection - System File Checker to be sure. Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - Enter. SFC takes about 20 minutes on most machines to check for missing or corrupt Operating System files.

Now, on to the persistant "scanning."

This is most likely being prompted by Internet Explorer v7.0 (beta).
I've recently come across this same phenomenon.

You will have had the experience going through the Windows Genuine Advantage Validations Procedure when you first logged into MS updates Website for your XP critical updates and patches. MS scanned your machine and the XP operating system to assure that it was not Pirated. After that one initial "validation" you have been able to manually or automatically "update" without further validation scans.

Not so, with Internet Explorer v 7.0 (beta) !!!
It "scans for validation" every time you turn your machine on or off, and every time to use IE to access the Internet.

Many folks have complained of this outrageous behavior on the part of Microsoft. One validation scan seems quite enough! But Microsoft persists. IE 7.0 even attempts to read and change the settings of your RAM!!! Whatever for, I do not know.

As a result some folks have decided to uninstall IE 7.0 and go back to using the IE 6.0.
Others have gone through the rather tedious steps of disabling the auto-scan validation process for this (beta) version.

As an additional observation, you have some optional toolbars that you may or may not have intended to have operating, and at least one Network Diagnostic utility onboard that seems to not be fully installed?

As a final note, your JAVA Runtime Environment needs to be updated.

Please note that I have made no attempt to "analyse" your HJT for malware, and while your current problem is most likely Operating System related, and IE 7.0 related, you should wait for a Qualified Expert to advise you on your HJT log before making any changes with HJT.

Best Regards
