Hi there

this is my first post to the forum, so greetigs & salutations to you all. I've attached below the HijackThis log of a scan I've just done. I've seen from reading the experiences of other folk that some seemingly suspicious items turn out to be harmless, but there is one in mine that I've never seen before. Even Googling it provides no results at all. The item I am specifically concerned about is something called "qjkj.exe", altough a glance over everything that's going on would be very much appreciated. Here it is:

Hi slipperhero,

Welcome to the Tomcoyote forum! Sorry for the delaly on getting a reply.
Malware can change with the amount of time that has past since you posted this HJT.
Please post a new HJT log for me to check. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  • Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly
Hi Tim

Many thanks for your reply. Apologies for my delay, but with the time difference I'm afraid it was early in the morning here when you responded, and I found myself at work by the time I saw your reply. So anyroad, as requested, please find attached a new HJT log. As you said, things can change over time, and I can't seem to find the strange file that concerned me when I first posted. I don't have any problems with pop ups, or random shutting down, but it does seem to take forever and a day to start up when first switching on. Here it is:

Hi slipperhero,
Yes I see the mystery file is not there now let's dig a little deeper see if something is hiding.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree. WATCH SCREEN:UNcheck box Add CCleaner yahoo! Toolbar and use ccleaner from within IE when installing in next step.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," check "Cookies" (you will need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to put check in for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
———————————————————————————————-

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button NOTE: If you have a popblocker enable you will have to allow popup here.
2. A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes. You may have to reboot here and start back with step 1. I did.)
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply with others requested.

That's it! I'm hoping that you will say that nothing is out of the ordinary, but when I first saw that strange file I was sure that I was victim to some brand new virus/trojan/spyware which no one had heard of before. It doesn't make me feel a whole lot better to think that it has simply disappeared, but I will await your expert opinion.

Many many thanks for the time you have taken already. I hope it hasn't been too much of a waste of it for your.

Regards
Neil

hi slipperhero,
Thanks for posting logs. Good job.
Do not worry you are not wasting mine time. I hate malware and love stomping it out and helping clean logs.
When you run Ccleaner you need to let it cleanout cookies that will short scan times and get rid of malware(that enters thru cookies) that shows up in scans.
You can reenter passwords to your websites.

———————————————————————
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," check "Cookies" (you will need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • Make sure there is a check mark in from of cookies.
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to put check in for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Make sure there is a check mark in from of cookies.
—————————————————————————

It will always be good to keep Java uptodate to keep malware from entering thru it. It can and will.
Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

REBOOT HERE BEFORE NEXT STEP

This scan is to see if anything was missed.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
[*]Click OK

[*]Now under select a target to scan select My Computer

[*]The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

[*]Now click on the Save as Text button

[*] Save the file to your desktop.

[*]Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Right click and choose Rename
Type in this Stopit.exe

Hi slipperhero,

Thanks for posting logs. Your log appears to be clean good job.
The files that showed up in scan are in Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine you can empty nortons Quarantine and they won't show up on future scans.

I got a notice that Java has had an update. I didn't have this notice when I posted for you to update java.

Updating Java
Your version of Java is now outdated. Java vulnerabilites are commonly exploited by viruses. You need to update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Click Start>Run type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Happy Surfin.
Tim
