Hello, shelf life!
After a several days trial of near continuous Internet connection, this computer appears to be malware free. I've taken a look at the additional security programs you suggested and will probably go with ZoneAlarm to replace Windows Firewall. My sons have been lobbying for its installation for some months, anyway!
Thank you so much for all your help with cleaning up my computer. In future, I'm recommending the TomCoyote forums to anyone with a malware attack.
