Mutiple Malware Attack

A couple of days ago, my computer was simultaneously attacked by viruses, adware, spyware, and what looks like a browser hijacking. Though connected by cable HSI, I wasn't "browsing" at the time, so I don't know how I triggered the attack. I'm reasonably computer literate, but I've never dealt with anything like this.

At the first sign of trouble (numerous popups for anti-virus, -spyware, -adware programs to buy), I switched off the cable modem and began running my security software. On the first sweep, SpyBot found and removed Vcodec, SpyQuake2, and all but one file of Smitfraud-C. It took two more runs to get rid of Smitfraud-C. Norton AntiVirus found and resolved Purityscan, MaxSearch, and SpySheriff. At the same time, dozens of NAV Virus Alerts appeared, one at a time, informing me that my computer was infected by: a Downloader (wlzip32[1].exe), a Trojan Horse (mulbin32[1].exe), SpywareQuake (issearch.exe), and SpyQuake (Spy-Quake2.exe). After NAV, I ran Ad-Aware, but all it found was the usual MRU List. Next, I deleted the Temporary Internet Files and purged Cookies.

None of this activity got rid of two shortcut icons on the Desktop – Online Security Guide (http://the securitypages.com/) and Security Troubleshooting (http://testonsecurity.com/), or something called Safety Bar that has hijacked my browser. Symantec tells me that numerous attempts were made to change my home page, and I've discovered that my custom Cookies settings have been altered. In addition, a dialog box pops up literally every five minutes trying to connect to the Internet, which I assume is some malware trying to phone home.

By using Google (on a different computer), I found a previous thread on this forum where someone with a very similar problem was helped. I'm hoping someone can help me, too! Every time I put the computer online (like to download security software updates and HijackThis), new infections bloom. The latest were four Trojans – a Nebuler (Backdoor.Eterok.B), a Downloader, a Dropper, and a generic Horse – and WinFixer.

Here is the HijackThis log. Please help!

Actually, except for downloading the ewido updates, I've kept the infected computer offline. No new attacks; only Safety Bar and the two mystery icons on the Desktop remaining, as far as I know. HijackThis has fixed the four checked items. Do I continue with the instructions on the "How to Remove:" page – reboot in Safe Mode and run the SmitFraudFix cleaning tool?
hi somerset22,

Do I continue with the instructions on the "How to Remove:" page – reboot in Safe Mode and run the SmitFraudFix cleaning tool

yes yes, my bad. continue with smitfraud in safe mode.

Hello, shelf life –

Following the instructions for "Running the Clean" took a long time. To start with, when I rebooted my computer in Safe Mode to run the SmitFraudFix cleaning tool (option #2) the Desktop in my account was black and the icons kept disappearing. I had to log off using Ctrl-Alt-Delete/Log Off (no Taskbar or Desktop icons visible) and re-log in to my account repeatedly just to accomplish anything.

At any rate, SmitFraudFix did the clean, and Ewido ran in Safe Mode. Ewido found four items: two Downloaders and two Adwares. I didn't write them down, because I thought they would be in the report. Doesn't look like they are.

Here is the rapport created after rebooting in Normal Mode and running SmitFraudFix option #3. At this point, I put the infected computer online to post the logs directly from it to the forum. Within minutes, numerous evil sites tried to put Cookies on it, and NAV informed me that I have a virus: WinFixer. The rapport is from before the invasion; the HijackThis log is from after. I've pulled the plug again. What next?!

hi somerset22,

things looking any better? if your still getting popups try running this:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

shelf life
When I put the computer online and opened IE, a NAV Home Page Protection Alert popped up saying multiple attempts have been made to change my home page:

Original Address: http://www.google.com/
Blocked Address: http://www.microsoft.com/issapi/redir.dll?pr...
Process Name: regedit.exe
Location: C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe

So, I downloaded VundoFix. After it ran, I opened the browser again and navigated through several web pages; no NAV alerts have appeared. At this point, the computer has been online for more than an hour, and it seems to be running fine. Does this mean the computer is clean?!

Here is the C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log:

hi somerset22.

online for more than an hour, and it seems to be running fine. Does this mean the computer is clean?!

good, if its better than it was then yes its probably clean nox
looks like vundofix did the trick. run hjt once more have it "fix":

but first please disable/exit ewido if the "guard" is running. thei can be done by clicking the icon by the clock. the reason is so that ewido will allow hjt to make the changes.

shelf life
HijackThis has removed the two checked items. A couple of questions: (1) Do I delete the backup folder HJT put on my Desktop?; and (2) Ewido keeps automatically updating itself, but I notice that the Resident Shield is listed as "inactive". Should I change its state?

The computer has been online for several hours today, and no new popups. Thank you, shelf life!

Here's the latest HJT log:

hi somerset22,

and no new popups

good.

Do I delete the backup folder HJT put on my Desktop?

yes you can delete the backup folder.

Ewido keeps automatically updating itself, but I notice that the Resident Shield is listed as "inactive". Should I change its state?

you can probably change ewido to update manually, in other words when you want to check for updates.

the shield or ewido "guard" is a real time protection component of ewido, you can set it to active but its only good for the trail version (30 days) after that you can still update and scan with ewido but to have the "guard" and have the real time protection or "guard" you have to purcahse ewido. the guard becomes disabled after 30 days.

if all is good, some reference material for you:

Be careful of what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software. You may be installing more than you think. Learn more about the program, Does it come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. DO YOU TRUST THE SOURCE? Check this database:Spyware Guide or this: Library before installing free/shareware.

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. These patch flaws/bugs that can be exploited.

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser. You can have and use more than one browser on your computer.
Like Firefox,

Install a Firewall:A firewall will help to control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. XP firewall dosnt block outbound traffic. Its important to know/learn what routinely needs a internet connection.
Zone Alarm
OutPost Lite
Jetico Personal Firewall
Look n Stop

Outlook Express with the default settings is not secure. It will run scripts, download images etc, just like a browser, but this was the old Outlook Express. Service Pack 2 has made huge improvements to Outlook, but just like with Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it.
try Pegasus E-Mail.

Make sure you have and keep updated Antivirus software
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download
AVG free version 7.0
AntiVir Personal Edition
Clam Win

Download one or two of these, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make changes to your browser and or your habits)
CounterSpy Free trial version
Spybot Search and destroy
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition
Microsoft Windows Defender
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"– there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware.Check here first.

AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free
Ewido Anti-Spyware
Trojan Hunter
Tauscan trial version

Other programs to consider:
Process Guard stop events/processes with user intervention
SpywareBlaster add security to IE
IE-SPYAD adds adware peddlers sites/domains to IE restricted zone
ATF cleaner (W2K,XP only) cleans out temp files, history, cookies etc.
