When on the net I keep getting the message "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close…………………………." This happens frequently. I have followed the link to Microsoft and that is of no help. Computer also locks up and I get the message"this program is not responding…………………." All Microsoft updates are installed and Norton Anti Virus is current. Please be specific as I am 62 years old and the lights are on but I am not the brightest bulb. I am running 2000 professional. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!!!!!!!
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

You need to get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe .

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here plese use the [Add Reply] button below.
Here are the results. THANK YOU!!!

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
That appears to have solved the problem. I have spent about 1 hour on the net and my computer has been fine. I sure hope this solves the problem. Thank you so much for your help. After rebooting a couple of times the computer seems to be running a little faster. Here is the new high jack this log:

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I have followed your directions but there is no system restore tab in my computer properties. I am running windows 2000 if that makes any difference.
