First, thank you to all of the great experts who help others selfishly here. When I was younger and knew about computers, I used to stop on my way home from work and help friends get their programs to run. Things have gotten very complex now however, and I am no longer the expert I once was. I do know how great it is (and rewarding) to help others though.

Here is a log from today. My computer has continuous network activity, and I cannot locate the source.

Regards, Jim Darrough

Well, I thought I had it figured out. I see constant network traffic as indicated by the tray icon, as well as looking at status. Here is a current Hijackthis log, after doing ewidos, ad-aware, and spybot S&D from safe mode. I have a Windows XP Pro machine.

Hopefully someone here can help. I am at a loss.

Thanks very much again.

Not seeing a whole lot.

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Seems toi be much better. I also installed ZoneAlarm, and found that System Mechanic was trying to access the internet extremey often. I will be emailing them about that. I also found a user on our net that is port scanning every minute. He is now blocked.

Thanks a lot. Here's the current logfile. If you see anything else, please let me know.

Your log looks good to me. You can try RegSeeker to cleanup old registry stuff if you want.

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
