Word97 Lost Menu Bar

The Menu Bar has disappeared from my Word97 documents. I have renamed normal.dot to force a new one. Same results. I have tried the folowing: Right click on any toolbar, choose customize. Then chose toolbars. Whe I left click on anything in the list, the box to the left either places a check mark and shows the menu or removes a check mark and removes the menu from view. When I try to do this with the "Menu Bar" item, the check mark is shown but I cannot remove it or do any other action with this selection. "Reset" does nothing in this dialogue box for Menu Bar either. Is this a virus or maybe a trojan or whatever? I ran Adaware (SE Personal, updated 25 days ago) and Norton/Symantic (ver 2005, updated about 3 months ago) but neither caught anything other than the usual stuff which I told each to delete. Help, what can I do??? Running Word-97 (Office 97) and Windows 98 SE TomKel
hi TomKel,

Is this a virus or maybe a trojan or whatever?

i would say no, not the cause, just guessing. need to see a hjt log first, as a starting point.
————————————————————————————-

* Downloads:
* Please make sure you have the latest version. HJT 1.99.1
* http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip
* If you are unfamiliar with zip programs get HijackThis.exe here:
* http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe

* First put hijackthis into a permanent folder.
* Do this first - go to C: and create a new permanent folder.
Example C:\AntiSpyWare or C:\hijackthis
* This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong.
* Then put (or download - choose "save" not "run") the hijackthis.exe file in this folder.
If you downloaded a zipped HJT file unzip it to the permanent folder so you have C:\hijackthis\hijackthis.exe.
* Example of the wrong way:
C:\DOCUME~1\Name\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe
* Running hjt from the wrong folder may delay assistance as your helper will have to ask for a new log

* Double click HijackThis.exe.
* Hit None Of The Above, just start the program.
* Hit Scan.
* When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
* Click that, save the log somewhere, and copy/paste in your next trply.

Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
click start->settings->control panel->internet options->programs tab->RESET WEB SETTINGS

Well this was unexpected.
I did all of the steps as per your reply:
Checked off the 7 items you said; Emptied the temp folders like you said; Reset Web Settings as instructed.
Then I closed and restarted my machine.
Then went into the directory list and renamed normal.dot so that Word would recreate one upon opening.
Went into Word and the results are the same.
(It did recreate a normal.dot but it is the same as the previous one).
No Menu Bar - cannot recreate it via my workaround of customize-toolbars via the mouse clicks.
Like before the dialogue box works for all other toolbars but for Menu Bar it shows the item as X checked and I cannot remove the check (it is suposed to be checked). Then I hit "reset" in that dialogue box and nothing changes.
I re-ran HJT again and yes all of the 7 items are gone. Also upon opening Explorer Browser it comes up with the default msn.com as my home page instead of my own page - so that worked.
Help! What do I do now?
Below is the new HJT log.

shelf life - OK OK OK ! I went to the first link (http://wordtips.vitalnews.com) and the first suggestion there was the culprit! When I changed the resolution there was the Menu Bar on the bottom of the screen. Moved it back topside; changed the resolution back - BINGO! Thanks so much for your time and talent even though it was aparently a "user error" and not a virus, etc. Thanks for your patience. Also thank the other member who found the link to wordtips for me. Oh, and also thank you for sending me to the explaination of that "Shuttle Technology" program that is connected with my Superdisk. At least you stayed on your assigned topics by ridding me of the terafinder junk so I guess it qualifies as a valid question on my part. : - ) Keep up the good work folks! TomKel
hi TomKel,

good. glad to help. happy safe surfing. some reference material for you:

Be careful of what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software.You may be installing more than you think. Learn more about the program, Does it come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks.
