My machine is a wreck...I need some expert help

Hello,
I've recently been blasted by some nasty malware. It started out as pop-ups and has escalated into full blown madness. Norton could only find something called Downloader but could not actually get rid of it. I followed all procedures to rid myself of this, but was unable (even in safe mode etc) to delete it. I grabbed AdAware and Spybot and ran them in order to quell the virus activity just enough to be able to get this plea for help out. This actually seems to have taken care of the Downloader virus by deleting the isobr61.dll that I could not. I then threw ZoneAlarm and SpywareBlaster on top of my temp fix in order to prevent further downloads and contamination.

However, my machine now runs at a snails pace (perhaps due to my unskilled use of the anti malware packages mentioned) and I still get popups. Thus, it is clear that I have not recovered my computer fully. Following what appears to be standard, I downloaded HijackThis and performed the scan. Below is the log. Someone please let me know what is to be done now in order to get my net life back. Im a step away from giving up, reformatting the HD, and starting over…this forum is my only recourse. Thanks.

Hey!
No worrys about the wait…my experience has brought the full scope of these malware problems to my attention and I understand that all you guys who dedicate your time to helping the general populace must be extremely busy. The number of posts daily is astounding. I'm just glad you all are around to aid the ignorant.

I've messed around a little more since last week. As indicated in my initial post my machine was sluggish after I threw ad-aware and spybot on it. I noted that there were some programs running that were not my own (things like Tclock) and endeavered to get rid of some of them. I went through the hijackthis log and began using this software to get rid of those exe's that I knew were not supposed to be around. After doing so, I got some speed back (still had the popups, but things were moving). Then I started searching for exe's in the log via the internet to see what was what and to attempt to kill other malware. I did find some more nasty apps and again used hijackthis to kill them. After this I explored this forum a little more and read the posts for beginners. I noted that I had not followed (though close) the desired procedure for getting my machine under control. In particular, I hadn't made use of the free trial of ewido anti-spyware. So, I grabbed that, updated it and ran it in safemode. It found a load of nasty apps that adaware and spybot had not and I allowed it to delete them. At this point the popup business in independed launches of iexplorer went away. Next, since ie seems to be a weak point, I downloaded mozilla firefox with the hopes of having a more secure browser. The browser was fine but I have noted that I get what appears to be a popup in a pane which appears along with my homepage. This pane always defaults to VH1. I've looked around the menu options but don't see where or how to turn this off if it is a legit function. Next, just last night I updated and ran all of the anti-virus and anti-spyware that I had (AdAware, Spybot, Norton Antivirus, and ewido) in safe mode…more trash was found and deleted. Finally, just this morning, I downloaded the new version of ZoneAlarm and ran their spyware. It caught a few things as well.

So, the machine runs at decent pace and the indepent browser launches have not returned as of yet. However, Im not convinced that all of the holes have been closed and sealed. Still have the annoying VH1 site, the virus software found new things after only a weeks worth of new internet activity (thus I suspect that some things have regenerated from the inside), and additionally, I have been unable to install XP SP2 (wanted for more security…don't know if this problem has anything to do with malware issues).

Here is the new Hijackthis log (just ran) and also the ewido log as of last night. I thank you for your help and look forward to your advice!

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I've done all that you asked. I have not messed with the machine much after rebooting, but operation appears to be as it was. ZoneAlert immediately yelled about Ocraware32 trying to access my machine…I denied the application but don't know if it was malware or not. Here is the new Hijackthis log (I killed the wordwrap). I await your next set of instructions.

ocraware.exe Optical Character Recognition software as part of OmniPage Limited Edition - supplied with some scanners. Scan directly into most word processor applications, such as Word, WordPerfect, etc.

That's scanner software. Do you have a scanner?
Yes, I thought that it looked familiar…I do have a scanner (UMAX Astra 3400). I believe OmniPage Limited Edition was indeed supplied with the software bundle that came with it. I do not really use any of the software that came with the scanner, as there was some conflicts between some of it (the scanner was relatively old at the time I bought this machine) and other software already installed on my machine. I use the scanner wizard in the accessories at this juncture. I just never removed any of the software and then forgot that it was even around. I admit that a cleanup of unused software has been overdue for a while.
I'm not sure about this one:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINNT\System32\ntvdm.dll

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINNT\System32\ntvdm.dll

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service. Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita. Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware. Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample. Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all. If you dont have these programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Sweet! Thanks again for your help…it is very much appreciated! I've create the new restore point, downloaded Spywareguard to go along with Spywareblaster, and updated it. I have the ZoneAlarm firewall up and Norton Antivirus running. I have bookmarked the article that you have suggested and will read it. I'll hit the forum again should future problems arise. You and this forum has been most helpful!!!…you may count on a donation from me. Regards!
