SpywareQuake removed, remaining issues

5 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

I followed the automated removal instructions (bleepingcomputer) to remove SpywareQuake using roguescanfix and smitrem. Everything seems to have gone well.
However, I still receive trojan alerts from McAfee about "Download-EV". It claims to find it in a directory that does not exist:
c:\documents and settings\bob\local settings\temporary internet files\content.ie5\8u6dkonr

I do find that the reported file, "!update-3895[1].0000" is in another directory that gets cleaned when I use IE to delete temp files and cookies.

I also keep finding that files such as "NDr46.tmp.html" keep showing up in my C:\Documents and Settings\BOB\Local Settings\Temp directory. To speculate wildly, these may be the result of the pop-ups I'm occasionally receiving. Also, an 'Aora' directory containing several T??.tmp files.

Anything you can do to help?

I did not. I thought I'd come to the HJT source for assistance with whatever's remaining and showing (I think) in the HJT log. Did I come to the wrong place?
I'll assume you downloaded and used SmitfraudFix? If not let me know.

We can clean the PC.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing
Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post a new HJT log.
I did not use SmitFraudFix. Should I do a search for it, download & install and follow your instructions?
I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Download this file from the link to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LDTate,

I already had these unchecked:
"Hide file extensions for known file types."
"Hide protected operating system files."
which is why I found it strange that McAfee was reporting a trojan in a directory I can't find (but found the reported file in another location).

Anyway…

Instructions followed.
Registry edit completed.
I received the following error during the HJT "Fix Checked" operation:
—–
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mmc.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [removed], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.
—–

Speculation: it was the dumprep that caused the error since it's still there…
The rest of the operation went well.
My computer seems to be behaving properly at the moment. No McAfee alerts or pop-ups since the few minutes I've been rebooted and typing.

Here's the new HJT log:

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have these programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
LDTate, Still running well. As a matter of fact, and as an added bonus, this operation seems to have restored Nero's ability to detect my burner - which recently became an issue about the same time I became infected; "Image Recorder" was the only option since infection. I'll now create a clean restore point. Thank you VERY much. YTM! -Bob
