A friend brought their computer over yesterday with problems. Friday she was browsing and picked up "Brave Sentry". System is XP Home. The background is black with the message :
"Your Computer is in Danger. Windows Security Center has detected spyware/adware infection! It is strongly recommended to use special antispyware tools to protect data loss."
There is a red shield among the running app icons that pops up the same message and adds "Click here to install the latest protection tools!". She clicked it thinking something was wrong. All hell broke lose after that. She tried to terminate it but failed so she brought it to me yesterday. I found a web site describing the pest and followed the removal instructions, but it didn't take: http://www.pchell.com/support/spyaxe.shtml.
She is having another subtle problem that may be malware or it may be a broken install - shortly after installing McAfee her system wouldn't shutdown completely. I'm investigating a solution and have found the same symptoms documented but thought you should know every symptom. Last symptom is random system lock - black screen. Not sure if this is hardware or not, its a few years old. Both these other symptoms have been occurring for many months - she's just ignored/dealt with them.
Please help us get this system cleaned. She is very mobile and uses her laptop to stay in contact with family & friends. She's also a school teacher and depends on internet resources to keep things real.
