[Closed] Miscellaneous spyware, unsure if it's still there

My uncle's computer (running Windows XP) was infested with spyware, and he asked me to fix it. I ran several anti-spyware programs and removed what they found. The programs used were Ad-Aware SE Personal (most up to date definitions and version), Ad-Aware 2007 (most up to date definitions and version), AVG-AntiSpyware (not up to date), AVG Anti-Virus (not up to date), Spybot S&D (most up to date definitions and version), and I ran ATF-cleaner. I tried to run AVG anti-rootkit, but for some reason whenever I ran the executable, it would not install. The problem my uncle was having was there were two different pop-ups that would come up repeatedly, saying his computer was being attacked or could be infected and to click "yes" or "ok" to fix it. There was also a red X with some warning that would randomly pop-up as a notification (the red X was in the system tray icon… thing. bottom right hand corner on Windows XP, and the notification was a yellow box, similar to standard windows notifications. the icon could not be right-clicked, single clicked, or anything).

After running those programs and cleaning the junk off (over 260 results with Ad-Aware, a decent number with Spybot S&D, and I don't recall the others. AVG AntiVirus's scan came up clean), the pop-ups have not appeared again, and the red X is gone. One other thing I forgot to mention is when I first started working on his computer, his background had some error and I had to click some button (possibly "restore active desktop" ?) to get it back to normal.

I also had some issues shutting down his computer a few times. It just did nothing when I hit shut down or restart, and I tried to run the command prompt (start > run > cmd) and I got an error message with this is in it '0xc0000142'

My questions are:

Is there anything I missed? (I don't know how to read the Hijackthis log file, and I'm guessing it might show something if I missed it)

What startup processes can I get rid of?

What programs/software (anti-spyware, firewall, and anti-virus) should I leave on there to try to keep his computer clean, and which ones should I take off? (He's not very good with computers, so anything automated and running in the background is good. The software being free is also very important)

Any idea why AVG anti-rootkit wouldn't install?

Any other recommendations for maintaining his computer?

He had Norton Personal Firewall on there before I did anything to his machine, and I left that alone. I put AVG7 on there to scan for viruses, and I was going to be Norton anti-virus software on there but for some reason it stopped in the middle of the installation. I'm not sure what the status of Norton actually is on that computer now, but I wasn't going to leave both anti-virus softwares on there. It's just that some programs catch stuff others don't (hence the 4 different adware/spyware programs, too).
I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Yes, sorry. I've been waiting to get an ethernet cable long enough to hook the computer up to a router so I can update the Anti-Malware software. It'd be a huge hassle to set the computer up closer to the router (mainly the monitor). I'll let you know as soon as I get it done.
Thanks, I really appreciate it. Alright, finally got the cable and some time to do this stuff. I have two monitors right next to each other, with the infected machine connected to one, and my PC connected to the other. I'm writing this as I follow the given instructions so I can try to make note of everything that happens (KVM switch, except not using the V part).

While Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program was scanning (quick scan), the following happened:

1.) window sayiing "Anti-Virus Verizon Yahoo! Online Protection Infection Alert" popped up saying a file was infected
Filename: C:\windows\admgcx.dll
Infection: Win32/Pripecs!generic
it actually detected it twice. (second time as C:\WINDOWS\admgcx.dll)
It also detected C:\WINDOWS\fsxloqf.exe
It said "You must reboot now to permanently clean infected items."
Choices were "Reboot" and "Close" I chose neither for now

2.) Norton Personal Firewall asked if I wanted to allow yop.exe to access the internet, I allowed it. (C:\Program Files\Yahoo\YUP\yop.exe)

3.) AVG Free Edition Resident Shiled popped up a window saying it detected a threat while opening file C:\WINDOWS\fsxloqf.exe
Trojan horse Downloader.Zlob.ST

I tried to click heal, it said access denied. I clicked Move to Vault, and it said access denied again.

4.) Internet Explorer opened on it's own (I think..) to the page http://www.system-defender.com/freeware/2/…did=37&p=01
It opened up two of these windows. When I tried to close them a window saying "If you exit now, your system will not be scanned for Spyware threats! Please click 'OK' to launch FREE scanner for complete system check-up."
It had the options 'OK' and 'Cancel', but I hit Esc when the window was highlighted because I've been told to try that first if you suspect it's spyware.

Now Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware has finished successfully, I clicked OK, then Show Results (at this point the AVG notification and the Verizon Yahoo Online Protection alert are both still up)

All items were checked, clicked Remove Selected

Closed AVG and Verizon Yahoo alerts..

Malwarebytes said it couldn't remove certain items.
c:\WINDOWS\admgcx.dll
says computer needs to be restarted to complete the removal process. Saved the logfile to my desktop.

Some Updates from HP thing popped up. It came from the right side of the screen, and there was nothing in the taskbar showing it. I'm not sure if it's legit. The popup disappeared.

I clicked Yes on Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to reboot my computer.

I suspect the reason Anti-Malware couldn't completely remove admgcx.dll is my fault. Sypbot's Resident shield asked me if I want to allow a bunch of changes to various things (they started popping up when Anti-Malware was removing infections..) and I noticed that it kept asking if I wanted to allow a registry change for admgcx.dll to add some random Hex(?) value. I allowed it a couple times, then about 2 or 3 times I denied the change because I've had issues with things before where as soon as you delete/get rid of it, it puts itself right back there. Since it was adding new values (not replacing an old one) for admgcx.dll, it looked suspicious to me.

Computer has restarted and is in the process of starting up the processes that normally open at login…

Spybot S&D, allowing change for Malwarebytes (deleting some reboot thing)

"Conflicting Anti-Virus Software Detected" It says
"You have AVG 7.5 installed on your computer.
To complete the Verizon Yahoo! Online Protection installation, and to take advantage of this free, integrated security suite, you will need to remove your old anti-virus software"
It gave three options.
Recommended option is to remove AVG and "complete Verizon Yahoo! Online Protection with PC Anti-Virus"
2nd option: Keep existing AV software, do not complete Verizon Yahoo! Anti-Virus
3rd: Ask me again later.
I selected Ask me again later.

Spybot S&D window popped up saying it detected a registry change
"Category: Shell Services
Change: Value deleted
Entry: admgcx
Old data *long hex data*"
I allowed it

Now running HijackThis v2.0.2

Updates from HP popped up again, then disappeared.

HijackThis is finished. Saved logfile. The notifications area on the right side of the taskbar say there are updates for windows; I have not installed them yet.

After I saved the log file, transferred them to a USB flash drive, and removed the drive, the computer seems to be very slow (most the icons on the desktop aren't showing up, and it's been a couple minutes since all the windows were closed). The Updates for HP also popped up again. The task manager doesn't show any process taking up abnormal amounts of CPU power (idling around 7-13% with the occasional spike to ~35%. PF usage is 450 MB, but there's a ton of processes running and the computer only has 256MB of RAM.)

Shutting the computer down. Windows gave me the option to "install important updates and turn off your computer." I elected to install the updates and then turn off. I noticed there was only 1 update that was being installed before it shut down. It did not specify which.

Wow that was a long post. If there's any confusion about what I wrote, let me know so I can clear it up. I wrote it pretty much as I was doing it and tried to balance speed and clarity. Thanks!
Recommended option is to remove AVG and "complete Verizon Yahoo! Online Protection with PC Anti-Virus"
2nd option: Keep existing AV software, do not complete Verizon Yahoo! Anti-Virus

It's your call but you only want one anti-virus running at one time. I use the AVG myself and don't know anything about the Yahoo one.

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Enable Teatimer

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish
I disabled TeaTimer and then ran ComboFix and then HijackThis. Here are the logs

Save this as Save this as "CFScript"

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I also denied changing the default page url to http://us9.hpwis.com

I ran CFScript, but it's stuck on "Deleting Files/Folders." It listed about 8 file paths, and hasn't done anything for.. maybe 20 minutes.

It also said "The system cannot find the path specified" immediately after saying it was going to scan for infected files.

It's still open and running, but it appears frozen to me.
