After several weeks of trying everything to get rid of the spyware and trojans I found an article in PCworld that led me here. Mcafee virus keeps finding a trojan downloader almost every time I hook in to the internet. I removed several bad programs. Then ran (in safe mode) spybot, ad aware (ad aware keeps locking up and never makes a full scan) and Microsofts beta version spyware. Also ran several online scans www.sarc.com, housecall.trendmicro.com, panda. Below is my HJT log. Please help…I have had her computer since Christmas and I think she wants it back…Thanks

Hi jmyerger :)

Please do this for me:

1. Download Service Filter
2. Extract it to it's own folder.
3. Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
4. A text file called POST_THIS will be in the same folder
5. Please use Edit>Select all then Edit>Copy to obtain the contents
6. Post the contents into this thread using 'Add Reply'
Thanks for looking at my problem…I have been away or I would have responded sooner. Here is the POST_THIS log The script did not recognize the services listed below. This does not mean that they are a problem. To copy the entire contents of this document for posting: At the top of this window click "Edit" then "Select All" Next click "Edit" again then "Copy" Now right click in the forum post box then click "Paste" ######################################## ServiceFilter 1.1 by rand1038 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Feb 17, 2005 9:08:41 PM ===> Begin Service Listing <=== Unknown Service #1 Service Name: SwPrv Display Name: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Start Mode: Manual Start Name: LocalSystem Description: Manages software-based volume shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service. Hi again jmyerger,
I need two more things from you.

Please download Getserive.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive.

Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up with the log.
paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

Next, download DllCompare
Make a new Folder for example C:\Dllcompare
Extract it to the new folder. Start Program and Click the Run Locate.com and wait a few seconds 'til the scan says complete.
(default settings usually are sufficient)

Click the Compare button to start the sorting process.

Paste the contents of the Getservices notepad log along with the findings of Dllcompare back in this thread.
Thanks again…hope this helps. jmyerger,

I sincerely apologize for the delay.

Please Download AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to a folder or your desktop. Don´t run it yet.

Next, since I don't know the version of CWshredder that you've used, please download the latest one from here:
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr…r_download.html
We'll use this later.

You will need to either print these instructions out or copy to wordpad. Disconnect from the internet.
Reboot into safe mode:
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the key.

Show Hidden Files and Folders
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

You may need to "show super hidden files":
Run this registry script, which forces Windows to show so called "superhidden" files:
Copy the contents of the Quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as Unhide.reg (make sure to save as type: "All Files")

Doubleclick Unhide.reg, and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry, then restart your computer.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\lbebu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gbjmf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hltoq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ocfbh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\svofr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\zeuht.dll

Then close all all programs and windows. Run HJT again. Put a check mark next to these items, then click 'fix checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\lbebu.dll/sp.html#37049

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - Startup: hpothb07.dat

Reboot….staying offline

Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Start it and hit ok Run it twice. Save the report.

Now run CWshredder.

Reboot and run a couple of online virus scans:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Reboot once again and post a new HJT log along with the report from AboutBuster.
It took a couple days but I think I covered everything you asked for. At one point the microsoft antispyware blocked a CW trying to access the internet…I am not sure we got it all but here are the logs of HJT and aboutbuster.

Other info for you: When I deleted "C\WINDOWS\lbebu.dll" per your instructions, I also saw "C\WINDOWS\ktmhx.dll" which looks strange.

One other problem I am having is with the desktop. I right click and under properties I get "Not Available" and under address; "file://C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html"

Hopefully we are close….thanks again.
JMYERGER
Hi jmyerger,
You may need to disable or exit Microsoft AntiSpyware if it is going to interfere with this fix.
Go offline….
rescan with HJT, check these items, close all browsers/explorer windows, then click 'fix checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\lbebu.dll/sp.html#37049

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
If you or an administrator didn't set these policies, then check this

Reboot into safe mode:
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the key.

Show Hidden Files and Folders
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Search for and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\lbebu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ktmhx.dll

Reboot and post a new log.

About this item:
file://C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html

Try the following:
Start>Control Panel>Display icon
Go to the Desktop tab
Click: Customize Desktop
Go to the Web tab
See if that entry is listed in the Web Pages area, or look for an entry called Security
If there, uncheck and delete
Info:
To disable Active Desktop all boxes in this window are un-checked.

If you wish to enable the Active Desktop check "My Current Home Page" to add your current home page to the Desktop or click "New" to add another web page and/or other Active Desktop features. To update the content you can click the Synchronize button. (credit FZWG)
I think you did it.
The desktop display is fixed. Looks like all the bad stuff is gone.
I did not delete the following because the is a McAfee Privacy Service that requires sign in to access the internet (I think this is what this is referring to).

Check this out. Hopefully I am done and can now update the computer to XP SP2. I learned a lot in this process but hopefully I won't need it for the 2 other computer I have.
Thanks

You're doing really good! :)

Okay, two things….you had a severe infection, sometimes malware will put restrictions and policies in place when IE has been hijacked.

O6 Section

This section corresponds to an Administrative lock down for changing the options or homepage in Internet explorer by changing certain settings in the registry.

Registry Key: HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

Example Listing O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

These options should only appear if your administrator set them on purpose or if you used Spybots Home Page and Option Lock down features in the Immunize section of Spybot.

If you didn't purposely lock your homepage as quoted above, then the line needs to be 'fixed'.

Also, do you know if a proxy has been set up to override your current internet settings? If one hasn't been, then I'd like you to rescan with HJT, check these items, close all browsers/explorer windows and click 'fix checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
Leave this line alone if you know it to be true

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Reboot

Download and run CleanUp to clear out your temps, history and cookies

Then, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

You will want to finish cleaning now by removing your restore points and starting fresh with them.
Please do this:
Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
