I wrongly posted this to the Spyware/Malware forum, please accept my apologies!
(I have no idea if this was caused by the 4 spyware programs Ad-Aware found or not)
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Using Fat32 file system, not FTNS
Problem List:
System Restore Error: "System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close ….
AppName: rstrui.exe AppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 ModName: kernel32.dll
Windows Script 5.6 Error: Error registering the OCX C:\Windows\system32\scrrun.dll ….
Using Run –> regsvr32 scrrun.dll error message: LoadLibrary("scrrun.dll") failed - access is denied
Attempt to switch to administrator user login –> "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction."
Attempts to download/update Mcafee Antivirus error: At the Mcafee Main site, No Active X warning bar appears and unable to download program.
Download of trial Mcafee from CJNET works but update window stalls.
Error in trial Mcafee on start-up –> "an error has occurred in the Script on this Page"
Active X Component can't create object: 'Scripting Dictionary' … mcp://C:\Progra~1\Mcafee.com\Agent\Regwiz.dll::default.htm
Internet Explorer default home page: Setting home page and entering UserName and password, remember on this computer only works for a few logons, has sometimes required relog in the middle of an active session that has not terminated the browser when returning to homepage.
When I firsted tried running SFC, it asked for the XP Pro CD, not the home version, With the correct version of SFC installed sfc /scannow changes nothing.
disabling all startup and services changes nothing in the above behavior
repair from safe mode changes nothing
setting up alternatine user administrative account changes nothing
IEregfix.exe changes nothing
IEfix.exe changes nothing
Anyone have an idea? really don't want to reformat etc and have 45 gigs of data.
Thanks
