I am trying to clean up my brother's PC and have installed mcafee enterprise av 8.5 with current dats, spybot 1.4 with current definitions. I have run multiple full scans with both products, many many things were found and fixed. What I think remains are a few problems. 1. spybot reports one remaining problem where it wants to delete 2 registry entries and delete the file c:\windows\system32\rpcc.dll. It deletes the registry entries but fails to delete the file (then or upon reboot). I also cannot delete the file in safe mode, not sure what else to try. The registry entries seem to come back also. 2. mcafee access protection has blocked email from svchost.exe (and there's quite a few of these running). The last time it blocked something was last night and I think that was before running spybot. So maybe this issue is cleared up? 3. I've discovered at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, there's an entry named "john315" with a value of "c:\windows\system32\srrvc.exe". I have deleted this entry multiple times but it comes back. The only other problem I know for sure it's still having is that it won't get an IP address from the local dhcp server (getting the auto 169.254.x.x). This could be entirely unrelated. However it was doing this when I frist got the PC, then after running mcafee's full scan the NIC was working properly again. Now it's "broken" again. The main original complaints from my brother were the inability to get on the internet (don't have much more information than that, sorry). Thanks for any help you can offer! I suggest you do this:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

After the pc is clean I suggest they contact their bank and let them know their account might have been compromised. If they've ever used their credit cards, I"d contact those as well.

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All (if all of the items in quarrantine need removing) then Remove Finally

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find Windows Event Services (SERVICE32)
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the
Services utility.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O23 - Service: Windows Event Services (SERVICE32) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system\services.exe (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the advice on the financial stuff, I'll be sure to pass it on to them. The service you mention was not running so I just disabled it. Then when I ran hijackthis, it did not list that as an option so I just saved a report (the first one here). Then I emptied the recycle bin, restarted and did a scan and log with hijackthis (pasted in 2nd post as it got too long for 1 post). Computer seems to be working normally at this point. Thanks! You can remove any programs I had you install

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
