Hi, I just got a new computer (HP slimline) and I'm having trouble with standby mode. Standby mode activates fine, but about 5 minutes later, the system will come back on. I would really like to resolve this so my system isn't always on. It is Windows XP media center edition. Any reason it would be doing this? I don't have a wireless mouse, and I'm quite certain that the mouse is not being moved at all. Thanks
Right click anywere on your desktop, and choose properties. under the screensaver tab, click on the "power" button and, there, will be your settings to configure stand-by options.
Yes, I know how to adjust the settings. The problem is that it comes out of standby without my moving the mouse or using the keyboard. My settings are: Turn off monitor: 10 minutes Turn off hard disks: 10 minutes System Standby: 10 minutes.
I know it says to "NOT" post HijackThis! logs in here, but I'm requesting it. So please make/post a current HijackThis! log file in this thread. I noticed the thread that LD Tate answered (then closed because you said your problem was "solved") had several malware items in it. Maybe one (or more) of them lingers and is responsible for your problem. If it turns out you are "hijacked", I'll move this thread to the appropriate forum. :)
Micah, that was a completely different computer. But…here ya go. Thanks.

Micah, that was a completely different computer.

Oops!!!

The log looks pretty good. The only malware I know of for sure that won't let a machine hibernate is Vundo.

I don't see any Vundo in the log.

If you recognize those HOSTS entries as "legit", then they're OK.

You do have TWO antivirus products active it seems (Symantec and AVG). That's not a good practice.

If one antivirus isn't sufficient then you're using the wrong one.

Peace!

M68 :)
I would uninstall AVG.

The "rule of thumb" I've been given is to remove them (antivirus products) in the reverse order they were added (i.e. last added is first to be removed). And ALWAYS reboot after you "uninstall" anything.

This is a "minor" spyware application (nothing to get shook up about):

C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE

But it's not the root of your problem.

ALCMTR Info

Normally there is an "O4" item you can "fix" to stop it, but I don't see any.
:)
Well..standby… is exactly that.. standby. Standby is used as a temporary hold, sort of like call waiting. If you want your computer to shutdown you need to enable hibernate. Standby keeps information in memory, not writting to the drives as it turns them off while your not actively using it.
