When I search on Google and click on a result, I am not sent to the site I clicked on. I am sent to another non-Google search page or to a site with info related to the site I wanted, but not the correct site. Please help me correct this problem. I have used Spybot, McAfee, and Ad-aware with no resolution. Thank you

Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

I do see some problems in your HJT log, that could be the cause of your difficulties.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic . We do need to see a current logfile.

To post, please use the Add Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please provide a description of the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions.
Thanks for your reply. I believe I may have gotten rid of the problem, but am not confident. Please review the latest log to see if I am still at risk. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Here's a recent HJT Log

Hi dmandsw:

I'm glad you posted back. That Hijacker is still on your PC, but we will remove it now. There is also some other really bad Malware present, so lets get it too, while we are at it. :P

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Next:

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Note any thing that can't be fixed and Reboot when done

Next:

You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix.[br]To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [start extracting] spoolvs.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [start extracting] spoolvs.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{EBA167E6-66B6-42FD-8B29-EE4DC77BB5F1}: NameServer = 85.255.113.116,85.255.112.16

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

For the following, do an ALL FILES SEARCH AND DELETE IT.
spoolvs.exe

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot as normal.

Then, please run Hijack This. Scan, then Copy and paste the log into this topic, along with the report.txt from FixWareout.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Home-work complete!

Thanks again for your help.

Hi dmandsw: I'm not sure that the entire Fixwareout txt. posted. If you will, please check what was posted, against your copy and if it did not all post, please do post it again. Your Hijack This log looks to be clean. But I hesitate to say your PC is clean until you post back with something on the Fixwareout issue. Thanks. :D
The report I posted was accurate. I did run Fixware again with this report. Hi dmandsw

Thanks for reposting that. The file shown in the report does look to be legitimate,
so there isn't much left to do.

If there are no continuing problems, I recommend the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?
