[MvK]

Hi all,
Been having problems with pop-ups since my kids found the Internet. Now that the kids are on their own PCs, I'd sure like to get rid of them (the pop-ups, not the kids!) I also have a strange one that started about the same time, where I have to go through the shut down procedure twice to actually get my PC to shut down, which I think may be something running illegally in the background. I can see a few things that look suspicious, but I'm not game to hack and slash without some guidance - any suggestions welcome!

Here are the directions for creating a zip file For Windows XP:
Using Windows Explorer, locate the first file you want to zip.
Right click on the file and select Send To and Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Right click any other files you want to compress and select Copy.
Right click on the compressed folder and select Paste. The copied files will be compressed and pasted in.

Managed to do all that except the last step: Run 3S. I checked all the items except User defined folders, but it comes up with the message: Access violation at address 0047616B in module 'sss.exe'. Read of address 00000000."

I don't appear to be suffering from pop-ups at the moment, but I noticed that I still need to shut down twice out of normal (non-safe) mode. It shuts down first go in safe mode.

Still having problems with pop-ups and the computer not shutting down first time ... when there are several popups still open they show on the task bar as DMSKINFO. Intersetingly I sometimes get a warning message about DMSKINFO.exe when I try to shut down, along with a message along the lines of "SFMTL(3).EXE - dll initialization failed". When I close these message windows the computer stays running, but a second shut down command will close it normally. Any suggestions?

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option,
however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up
in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account
which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because
you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will make a restore point if we need it.

Backup your Registry...
click start > run > enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Then download RegSeeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

I ran RegSeeker as directed - there were a few persistent entries, and it played merry hell with some Adobe Acrobat updates I had loaded previously, but now that all the dust has settled, I'm free of pop-ups - yippee! I still have the problem of requiring two goes to shut down the computer, but the pop-ups appear to have gone. Thanks!
