Hi everyone, I need my HiJack This! log file analyzed. I keep getting unwanted pop-ups, and I expect spyware. For example, I keep getting a pop-up entitled "Windows Security Alert," and several others like it, and bottom line they all send me to these really phony looking websites trying to get me to download their product, which will of course cure every computer problem ever known to mankind with the single click of a button.

I went through all of the steps that you guys ask before scanning, and here is my log:

Welcome to What the Tech, sorry if there was a delay, it's a busy forum.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free...mitfraudFix.exe
Double Click SmitfraudFix.exe on your Desktop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Posted Image

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

Posted Image

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt

You don't seem to be running a firewall. If you're not running any firewall or are not sure please follow these instructions to turn Windows Firewall on.

Go to Control Panel or settings Control Panel
Double click on Windows Firewall
The two main options are On and Off. Check to see if there's a checkmark next to On and if not please select it.

Please now let me know if you are using Windows Firewall or another one.

Now please reboot and post a new HijackThis(HJT) log.

By the way, I went into the control panel and looked at the Windows Firewall. It shows it as being turned on, so that should be fine. It is, however, the only firewall that I am using. I downloaded a freeware firewall several months back, but it was seemingly doing nothing and slowed my PC down big time, so I soon disabled it.

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

Posted Image

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Now please reboot back into Normal Mode, post a new HJT log and let me know how your computer is running.

Logs to include in your reply

I'm waiting for a average computer that can't be infected with malware unless it's intentionally ........ 5 years later: I am still waiting

Hi everyone, first and foremost, my apologies for the belated nature of this reply. I have been unable to access the forum for several days now, and haven't been able to respond. Again, my apologies. I did everything that Enigma told me to do, and from what I can tell things are back to normal. Before, I was getting pop-ups, and I also had three icons on my desktop for fake spyware removal programs. Moreover, when I would launch IE, it would take me to some UCleaner web page, another spyware gimmick. All of that has gone away now, and like I said before, things seemed to be back to normal. The following are my HJT log and my Rapport log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 2:53:39 PM, on 1/25/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\WLKeeper.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgemc.exe C:\Program Files\Wave Systems Corp\Common\DataServer.exe C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\guard.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\NICCONFIGSVC.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\Contour Shuttle\ShuttleEngine.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ifrmewrk.exe C:\WINDOWS\stsystra.exe C:\Program Files\Wave Systems Corp\Services Manager\DocMgr\bin\docmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe C:\Program Files\NTRU Cryptosystems\NTRU Hybrid TSS v2.0.7\bin\tcsd_win32.exe C:\Program Files\Contour Shuttle\ShuttleHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Search Protection\SearchProtection.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apntex.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WebUpdateSvc4.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\HidFind.exe C:\Program Files\Software Secure, Inc\SSIRuntimeService\SSIRuntimeService.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\MESSEN~1\ymsgr_tray.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\Wave Systems Corp\Services Manager\Secure Update\AutoUpdate.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\ONENOTEM.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Intel\Wireless\Bin\Dot1XCfg.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSTE08.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! What was the 3rd party firewall you were previously using?

Are you using the trial version Ewido Anti-Spyware?

Optional
You have MP4 Player installed. This program changes your homepage, changes your browser's search engine as well as collects information such as what sites you have visited in order to deliver ads to your computer. For more information please go here
There are other, free programs you can use to watch mp4 files that are safer and allow you to also watch many other file formats. VLC media player is a one such program. I highly recommend you uninstall it. If you want to do so please follow these instructions.

Click on the Windows Start button in the left hand corner of your screen.
Go to Control Panel or Settings>Control Panel
Double click on Add or Remove Programs and uninstall
MP4 Player

Open up HijackThis, do a System Scan and select the following entries(if present)
O2 - BHO: SXG Advisor - {696EE2DD-9008-44D5-BA5F-286D59F77F2E} - C:\WINDOWS\dopfwrldxw.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: The egodktf - {0720868F-9F83-48AB-B1C2-284674202F72} - C:\WINDOWS\egodktf.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: aslpmqk - {D46AF2B0-19F0-42D4-B78A-9829064669D9} - C:\WINDOWS\aslpmqk.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: bxsnvqt - {4A8B6AAE-0512-4457-97EE-049F32FB9061} - C:\WINDOWS\bxsnvqt.dll (file missing)

If you chose to uninstall MP4 Player please also select this entry
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mp4 Player] "C:\Program Files\Mp4 Player\Mp4Player.exe" hmw
Then close all other windows (you can keep the current browser window open if you like) and press Fix checked and close the program.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Go to All Programs, go to Accessories and then click Windows Explorer

In Windows Explorer click the Tools Menu, then click Folder Options. Switch to the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders check the Show hidden files and folders circle. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files circle. A warning box will come up asking if you want to do this, press Yes. Press Apply and then OK.

Please delete the following files listed in bold, don't worry if they're not there, it just means they've been deleted.
C:\WINDOWS\egodktf.dll <--- This file
C:\WINDOWS\aslpmqk.dll <--- This file
C:\WINDOWS\bxsnvqt.dll <--- This file

If you chose to uninstall MP4 Player please also delete this folder.
C:\Program Files\Mp4 Player <--- This folder

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
Click Start. Go to All Programs, go to Accessories and then click Windows Explorer

In Windows Explorer click the Tools Menu, then click Folder Options. Switch to the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders check the Do not show hidden files and folders circle. Check the Hide protected operating system files circle.Press Apply and then OK.

Now please reboot your computer.

Download: CCleaner (freeware)
http://www.majorgeek...wnload4191.html
Run the installer, and uncheck the option to install Yahoo toolbar (unless you want Yahoo toolbar).
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows [tab]
The following should be selected by default, if not, please select:
Posted Image
Next: click Options click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Please post a new HJT log.
