Hi All,

I'm having a problem with pop-ups on my wife's computer. She's running Windows XP which has only recently been upgraded to SP2. Since the upgrade she's been getting a lot of pop-ups and I've run the usual line up of programs like SpyBot, Ad-Aware Se Plus, Counter Spy and Nortons Anti-Virus. I've run those programs in Safe Mode also to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Below is the Hijack log.

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0f57ff08-82d7-4e11-bcfb-a79521f20df7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\digtup.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: digtup - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\digtup.dll

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\system32\digtup.dll <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)
Hi Micah, I've done everything that you've requested but I cannot delete digtup.dll. It tells me that the file is in use by another person or program.
Please post a new HijackThis! log.

We'll probably have to employ more agressive tactics to remove it.

You should probably do this before posting a new log.

Rename this file (HijackThis!):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\HijackThis.exe

To:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\noname.exe

Then reboot.

There are infections afoot that "hide" from HijackThis!

Renaming it, then rebooting, will bring them out in the open, if present.
:)
Hi again Micah,

Thanks for all your help!….

here's the new (renamed) hijack log……

The good news is that nothing was hiding.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Download Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip © Option^Explicit

Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Note:
The above item is an "optional" fix. That program is an unnecessary resource hog.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Note:
The above item is an "optional" fix. That program is an unnecessary resource hog.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [RealPlayer] "C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\realplay.exe" /RunUPGToolCommandReBoot

Note:
The above item is an "optional" fix. System Tray icon for RealPlayer. If you subsequently start RealPlayer manually it adds itself back to the start-up list. You can stop this from happening by right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling StartCenter via Preferences

O20 - Winlogon Notify: digtup - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\digtup.dll

Then click "Fix checked" & close Hijack This!

Now, run Killbox.

In Killbox select "Delete on Reboot".

Paste the next line into the "Full Path of File to Delete" text box.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\digtup.dll

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

When the machine reboots, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Hi again :)

Here's that new Hijack log.

Again, thank you for all of your help….it's greatly appreciated.

Just a little "cleanup".

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0f57ff08-82d7-4e11-bcfb-a79521f20df7} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\digtup.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: digtup - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\digtup.dll (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" & close Hijack This!

Reboot.

Are things running better now?

Securing Your PC After An Attack
Excellent!! Thanks for your patience. Everything seems to be working fine now….Thank you again for your help and your very speedy responses. Patrick
Great!

A couple of "loose ends" to take care of.

First, rename HijackThis! back to it's original name.

Second, remove this folder:

C:\!Killbox

Killbox makes backups of things it removes and places them in that folder.

Thank you for choosing TomCoyote for your malware removal solutions.

M68 :)
