Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates. Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well). Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES. Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED. When it's finished, REBOOT your system.

Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, ALWAYS check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware. THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings.
To scan, click NEXT. This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say YES to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?" Reboot again.

Next, please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Etrust:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Choose fix or clean.

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot inbetween each scan.

After the last scan, reboot and run Hijack This! again and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

There will most likely be some residual cleanup work to perform. :)
Whew! I followed your instructions to the dot and am just now getting down (still slugging around the net on a 56k modem ;)). Anyway, my computer has sped up a great deal, but there are still a few strange things happening when I connect to the internet. I suspect it has something to do with the process ts.exe. As of now I have found 8 trojans (useing the links you provided me) and about 1500 spyware related files. Now my log is as follows :

GOOD JOB!!!!

Now for that "residual cleanup" I mentioned.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This! and fix these items:

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\1f9ykqc.exe <— file

c:\program files\tv media <— FOLDER

c:\program files\common files\tsa <— FOLDER

c:\windows\system32\uwrhhn.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)
Okie Dokie, I did as you said. I couldn't find two folders in safe mode here they are : c:\program files\tv media and c:\windows\system32\uwrhhn.exe. I'm pretty sure they were deleted when I fixed the files with hijackthis. I can't thank you enough for what you are doing! Here is my current log :

Fix this:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll (file missing)

And post a new log file.

If it stays gone, and nothing else creeps in, you'll be good to go!

M68 :)

P.S. You need to visit the windows update site and upgrade XP to SP1 (NOT SP2!), and download the latest updates for IE.

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(I am waiting till get get the bugs out of SP2 for XP before I upgrade)

Woot! The computer is like new again, now I'll just have to maintain it a little better ;). Here is the most up-to-date log :
