cant shut xp down

the "standby" "shut down", "restart" buttons dont work in xp home sp2. they appear but when clicked, the cursor displays the hourglass and returns to the screen, after taking no action…have to close all apps and hold the power button downfor 5 sec b4 it finally shuts down. roxio is installed and the direct cd 'stuff' has been removed, with no difference either way. i am at my wits end and google doesnt help much, so plz advise. have run norton a/v, lavasoft. and spybot and they gave no indiation of a problem, but somethig is definately wrong

Have you posted a log yet..? if not follow the instructions below to do so. While your waiting for your log to be reviewed however, check this for me. Click on start, then run, then type msconfig and press enter. Under the BOOT.INI tab it shows the MBR which will look similar to this:

At the end of ../fastdetect .. does it say ./NoExecute=OptOut ..? or does it end at /fastdetect?
