I have Smithfruad-c on my computer as detected by SpyBot S&D and the software cannot remove it. Now I cannot get into Internet Explorer, when it does come up it directs me to a unrecognised site to download SpyAxe. I have run AVG, Spybot, Adware, PC-Cillan, RegCleaner, CCleaner and TheCleaner in SAFE MODE and Normal Bootup. Anything found was removed except to the Smithfraud-c

When I first ran HJThis a number of errors came up. The second time I ran it there were no errors

Here is my log which was run in SAFE MODE

I have a secondary computer I am using to access the internet and communicate with you.

Thanks for the help!
Hello guydurrett, welcome to the forum

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please print out or copy these instructions\tutorials to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Download SmitRem.exe © noahdfear to your Desktop.
From HERE
Double-click the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your Desktop.

Please download the trial version of ewido security suite. Install ewido security suite and start the program from the icon on your desktop, then check for and download updates. Don't Run Yet.

Reboot to safe mode and open the smitfraud folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. When the tool completes:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {1ca480cd-c0e5-4548-874e-b85b17905b3a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp367C.tmp

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these files if listed.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp367C.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe

Open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Empty recycle bin.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log and the Ewido log.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
LD - followed your instructions and I am back on-line on my primary computer. I have attached my lastest HJT log for your review. I did have to manually delete some files using reg-edit. After performing all of your suggestions, I ran SpyBot. It indicated that Smithfraud-c was still on my computer and could not be deleted because it was still in memory. Clicking on the spyware found in SpyBot shows you the registry location of the problem files (as I am sure you know) I went into RegEdit and deleted all of the folders located at

HKEY USER/S-1-5-21-1708537768-796845957-682003330-1003/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/CURRENT VERSION/INTERNET SETTINGS/ZONEMAP/DOMAINS/

and

……../ESDOMAINS

I ran SpyBot again and Smithfraud-c was gone, 6.5 hours later. Great way to spend my Saturday. Let me know if you see anything else in the log I need to deal with. Also any suggestions as to any software that would keep this kind of S!@#$%T from loading. Thanks very much for your help!!!

Good Job

Download this file from the link to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
LD - every thing looks good. I ran DelDomains.ini and everything seems ok. Should I run this on any scheduled basis? Also I will be adding Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD to my collection of scanners, per your suggestion. Thanks again for the help!!! :D :)

I ran DelDomains.ini and everything seems ok. Should I run this on any scheduled basis?

You shouldn't need to do that
