Please review my HJT log. A progrma called Spyaxe and other items installed on my computer. IE has extra bars and my home page is hijacked. Pop ups appearing and I can't get far on the internet before I get no page found and it tries to force me to use Spyaxe removal (which I won't)

I rebooted in safemode and generated the following HJT logo. Please review and instruct on what to remove and do to stop this infection.

Hello David and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Sorry for the wait, we are extremely busy. You do have some nasty stuff that must be removed, but first I have problems with your log.

1) Your version of HJT is outdated, you can update from within the software like this: Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions.

2) You are running MSConfig in Selective Startup mode. I need to see the logs in Normal Mode. Click on Start, Run then type "msconfig" into the box and OK. Click on the Startup tab, then Enable all. Apply and OK your way out.

3) Post a new log with version 1.99.1 and with MSConfig in Normal Mode and I will respond as soon as possible with instructions.

Thanks for getting back to me. Followed your instructions and made a new HJT log. Before your review, please note the following:

1. While waiting, I read some other related postings on spyaxe and downloaded spyaxefix and ewido
2. Ran spyaxefix.bat, ewido, and adaware. Items found and removed.
3. Pop-ups and redirects were still happening
4. After another reboot, ewido ran again and removed items again. Pop up warning from spyaxe has not appeared since.
5. My updated Nortons found the home redirect and appears to have fixed (at least my home page setting for google.com is coming up now).
6. I still see the extra tool bar in IE and image I have other issues.

OK David, I can't scan this log. Look at the notepad, under Format. If Word Wrap is checked, uncheck it. I need a single spaced log. I would also like to look at the ewido scan report you just ran. It will be in the ewido folder, inside the Security Suite folder in a folder called Reports. Open the first one you ran and post it along with a HJT log single spaced. I can see at least one bad line still in that log. I do not know what fix you used? SpyAxe is now fixed along with other Smitfraud junk by a fix called SmitRem. If you ran the SpyAxe fix it would fix it but not the rest of the junk. Thanks...Phil

OK David, thanks for the feedback, I do appreciate it. I wish to give you some also. When I looked at the first log you posted, I say the SpyAxe line plainly: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpyAxe] C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe /h It was one line up from the marker indicting Selective Startup was running. I needed to get HJT updated because the new version shows an infection that the version you were using did not. If this item had been present in the 020 area of the lost, it has to be removed first. Once I had seen this infection was not present, then my intentions was to run a fix by noahdfear (who also made the SpyAxe fix) and this fix called Smitrem would have remove all of the Smitfraud infection because noahdfear recently added SpyAxe to the fix. In fact he will be removing the Fix you used at anytime. This is a marker for the need to run the complete fix:
O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {724510c3-f3c8-4fb7-879a-d99f29008a2f} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpF0DB.tmp (file missing) and you also have this one:
O3 - Toolbar: SecurityToolbar - {736b5468-bdad-41be-92d0-22ae2ddf7bcb} - C:\Program Files\Security Toolbar\Security Toolbar.dll which is: http://castlecops.com/clsid-23201.html as is part of the junk the Smitrem fix is designed to remove. Take a look in your Add Remove Programs and uninstall Security Toolbar if it is there.

To be sure everything is removed, I believe we should run the complete fix. This is the only way I can be sure we get it all.

Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

(since you have this check to make sure it is set up properly and run it again, it will not hurt to see what it locates the second time)

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

I followed your intructions and got all the applications ready but when I got to the HJT scan in SafeMode I had the following issue:

The scan results did not show one of the lines in my log:
04 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Instead, I had a line that looked like this:
04 - Start:AutoPlay.exe

So I rebooted into windows and re-ran HJT and I can see the line you noted and not the one that showed up in SafeMode. In fact it appears that I have the line twice with a slight difference in it (says "Scheduler V3.exe"). See my latest HJT log and advise please. Thanks!

Thing are not going well, you have in no way followed directions through this entire fix. You have moved ahead of me and done things with out waiting for instructions and several weeks have gone by while I wait for you to follow these directions. In the last instructions I requested you to post:

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

You posted a HJT log and nothing else. I am going to give you these instructions one more time, if they are not followed I will have done all I can for you.

The instructions start here, do not run any program until you are asked to.

1) Make sure you have This file downloaded to the Desktop as instructed:

and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

2) Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

3) You have Ewido already downloaded, open it first and update it, make sure you have it configured like this:

5) Click on Start, Control Panel then open Add Remove programs. Look for C:\Program Files\Security Toolbar\ and uninstall it if it is there.

6) Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

7) Open HJT and click on "Do a system scan only"
Put a check in front of each of these items and then click on FIXED CHECKED

8) Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

9) Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

10) Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktopClose Ewido

11) Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

12) Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

13) Post the contents of:

the Panda scan report
a new HijackThis Log
the contents of smitfiles.txt
the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

The stuff that Panda located and could not remove (they stopped doing that for free but they are still a great method for finding fragments of problems like that) You can remove manually. It appears they are all associated with adware. Search for the files and manually delete them. You will probably have to do this in safe mode. To be sure, once you delete them they will move to your recycle bin, leave them set in there for a few days, once you are sure the computer is running ok then empty the recycle bin. Check the bin as instructed below to make sure it has not been bypassed.

RECYCLE BIN
Let's check you recycle bin to make sure it has not been bypassed. RIGHT click on it and choose properties. It should, by default, be set to "Use one setting for all drives"
Make sure the box "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted IS NOT CHECKED. Make sure you have space for deleted items, I keep my bin set at 5%. Now when we delete the file or folder, it will be moved to the bin and can be restored IF we make a mistake and need it back. I hope this helps.

The HJT log is ok, smitrem shows you are clean and ewido, which does not look like the first scan run, is showing only cookies. Here is information for controlling cookies in Internet Explorer if you want it:
