hi, some one please help!
when I double click my my computer icon on desktop it takes an age to populate the window that opens
this happens on all users.
my step daughter has a habbit og downloading all the ms smilies, etc.
IF IT BLINKS SHE DOWNLOADS IT.
If ur system is slow to respond generally, you might want to rule our chances of spyware/virus infections first. run updated scans with spybot and adaware. Also if lots of stuff in downloaded, check ur HDD, see if its choked or fragmented, run a disk cleanup, then chkdsk and defragment the drive, this will help improve file access. Also check if there are too many items loading at startup, if so uncheck those u dont need at boot.
hi, thanks for that.
adaware and spybot and avg all latest versions show nothing.
all my other icons in the desktop on double clicking populate instantly on opening and all programs run quickly enough.
It just takes approx 30 seconds from double clicking the "my computer" icon to the window that opens instantly to populate. A sweeping torch is all that appears, nothing down the side either ( make a new folder, desktop, publish, share this folder, etc.).
This applies to all users.
I have run disk check and defrag (took 17 hours!).

Hi again,
Wow! 17 hours! must have been pretty cluttered, the advantage of doing it more regularly is it will hardly take you few minutes when u do it each time.
Anyways to the My Computer Issue, please check out this link, might help- http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=819017
Hi, I normally defrag monthly, but it's been a while!!
Thanks for the link.
I am running a hp printer but none on the list. I tried the remedy anyway but to no avail.
The problem occurred about the time I installed the hp printer ( about 2 weeks ago) so it would appear that is the problem.
Funny, it said nothing on the box about the annoying conflict!
I left a suggestion about it seems to be hp photosmart printers also and hope they respond, any other ideas gratefully accepted though! As in this day of instant, a wait of even a few seconds is unacceptable!!!! (ha, ha)
thanks
mildly annoyed
hey "one", i was just wondering if you ever got this problem worked out or if anyone else has any other suggestions
i followed the windows support page's suggestions and don't have an hp printer or cable modem hook-up which they mention could be the culprit as well
what is so odd about my problem, though, is that my computer is pretty new (about 4 months) and i have been very careful to keep it safe and free of all spyware/adware/viruses, etc. and this is, basically, the first problem at all that i have encountered
i am running windows xp, and, like the first post on this thread, whenever i go to open "My Computer" it takes about 30 seconds of flashlight/hourglass searching before the files appear, after which navigating through those files operates at a completely normal speed
any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated, either via email or on this message board
thank you very much in advance
