Hello All,
My daughter started her computer this morning and she cancelled out of a window that appeared (sorry I can't give any more details.) Later in that same boot it hung with an empty desktop… no icons or tool-bars. Every boot after that it hangs at the Win2K flash screen with the progress bar at approximately 50% and the animated slider above the progress bar frozen.
Will boot in safe mode. (AVAST scan shows no problems.)
Won't boot in last known good.
Won't boot in safe mode w/ network.
What should I do next?
Thanks for any help,
John
Do a Disk Check
Go to properties of your C: (ALT + Click / Right-click)
Go to the "tools" tab.
At the first section, the "Error-checking" section, Click "Check Now"
Check both boxes and click start.
Click Yes at the prompt.
Reboot your computer.
Let it run through it's scan….boot into Safe Mode again and do the following:
Start > Run > copy and paste in:
sfc /scannow
Click 'OK'
You will need your XP/2000/ME disk. If you don't have it and instead only have a recovery CD, there is a work around. View the following link for a tutorial:
sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.
If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.
Let us know if that solves the problem and you are able to boot normally. If you are but you get any more errors appear…please type them in this thread exactly as you see them
