Hi,

My nephew's lap top hangs while attempting to do a normal boot (hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen)

It does correctly boot into safe mode with networking and I can access the internet.

Since I can only boot to safe mode, I will await instructions on which program I should run first.

Thank you.

Hi maldini,

  :welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Go ahead and try to get a log in safe mode:

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments,  attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

---------------------------------------------------

  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt and the Attach.txt reports in your next reply

Sorry for the slow response.  I did not have internet access last night.

What more can you tell me about that system?  It's not running correctly at all.

Is this a new install?

When did it start behaving incorrectly?

What was happening at the time?

The computer will not boot into normal mode.

It first started happening about 2 months ago.

My nephew has not used it since that time.

He can not remember doing anything specific when it happened.  Just one day he turned it on and it would not boot to normal mode.

The network connection icon on the lower right hand part of the task bar states that I am not connected to the internet but in fact I am connected.

I have not noticed any other symptoms in my limited use so far in safe mode.

This is not a new install.  This is an old machine.

OK.

I'm not thinking that this is malware related... but there is a chance that malware has scrambled things.   There is also a chance that the controller is failing.

I suggest that before you do anything more, that you be sure to back up anything important.

Once that is done, let's try a startup repair.  Make sure any external drives or USB drives are disconnected.
  • Restart your computer and then begin tapping the F8 key like you do when you're going to enter safe mode.
  • When the Advanced Boot Options screen comes up, select Repair your Computer.  Hit enter to start the recovery environment.
  • At the System Recovery Options screen - make sure that Windows 7 is highlighted and click enter.
  • Then select Startup Repair
  • Your computer may or may not restart one or more times... just let it do it's thing until you get a screen that let's you click on Finish.
Let me know if there is any improvement.

Start up Repair did not detect any problems

After it completed, it asked me to reset which I did, and the machine tried to boot in normal mode.

I don't quite understand why, but the computer completed the boot process this time :)

I tested a full restart procedure after this successful boot and it was successful again :)

The icon that shows the network connection in the task bar still thinks that the computer is not connected to the internet but the computer does connect correctly.

I don't see any other issues besides the network connection icon.

I don't really understand though why this works now when the Startup Repair did not actually find anything but I am not complaining. :)

Now that we are in normal mode, please let me know what I should run next to assure the machine is healthy.

The repair procedure re-registers some services. This may have got them started as they existed but were failing to start.

Please run me a new set of DDS logs in normal mode.

Unfortunately... the system isn't running much better than it was before.

Let's do a version check:
  • Please download WVCheck by Artellos from one of the mirrors below;

    Artellos.com (exe)
    Artellos.com (zip)

  • After the download, run WVCheck.exe
  • As indicated by the prompt, This program can take a while depending on your hard drive space.
  • Once the program is done, copy the contents of the notepad file as a reply.

That looks pretty good. Updates were working through November.

Let's give this a try:

n1eMMmT.jpg Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install and then run the program.

On the Start Repairs tab click Start
DwysfIW.jpg

When the Repair Options screen populates, be sure to select all items and also check Restart System When Finished.

Now press Start

Once complete... please provide new DDS logs again.

That step did not go well. :(

I was able to download and run Windows Repair All In One.

During its run it crashed hard, forcing the system to reboot and failed during boot with the blue screen of death.

It fails booting every time with the blue screen of death.  It does not stay on the screen long to get a full read of the error but it appears to stating to be some sort of error in the display driver.  It then quickly resets before I can read any more information on the blue screen.

I can still boot back into safe mode.

Should I run the Repair Your Computer/Start Up Repair step again?

>That looks pretty good. Updates were working through November.

As an addendum to my previous post I wanted to speak to this comment you made.

I don't think the computer was used after that time November period which is why no updates may have been seen.

I was just glad to see that it hasn't been a long period of time since it updated.

Yes. Try the startup repair again.

Do you have the Operating System disk for this machine?
