… PestControl kept finding things that Ad_Aware, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster weren't finding. It was CWSGoogle.3 or something like that, and it referred to xxxtoolbar.com - I finally uninstalled PestControl, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking some error. Here's my log, and thanks in advance for any comment:

Hi chex, Welcome to TomCoyote Forums. One of our experts will be along shortly to check over your log; I'm still a trainee, so I'l defer to them in diagnosing your problems. :) If you were referring to Pest Patrol, I have also had that warning from them, but I have never found anything in my system that would support it. I look at it as a false positive, but that's not altogether bad; I'd rather have a scan set TOO SENSITIVE rather than slack. An occasional false positive is better than missing a real infection, at least in my opinion. Do you have any symptoms that would lead you to think you have a problem or is this a "just-in-case" checkup? The more information you can provide, the better we can help. I would recommend continuing occasional scans from Pest Patrol, as well as online virus scans by PandaSoftware and BitDefender. They are a good resource, as they always have the latest virus definitions. Good luck, and keep checking here for a verdict.
Create a new folder called C:\HijackThis, extract the HijackThis.exe file from the zip file into the new folder and run it from there. This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.windowsupdate.com

Reboot when done. To make sure, click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'.

Let us know how you get on.
Hi Daemon, I did everything you suggested, and there seem to be no problems with the browser or computer behavior. The recheck with CWShredder read 'clean.' Couple of questions: 1. Can you (or anyone else) tell me what the problem was in the first place? 2. At this point I'm assuming that everything else on the scan by HijackThis was OK and should be left alone. Right? Much obliged, Chex
CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in MS JavaVM, so just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. Once you have the all clear from CWShredder, it is vitally important that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended. For more info go here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

The rest of your log is OK.
I have removed MSJava VM, replaced it with Sun Java, and I have installed all updates advised at the Windows update site. Thanks again, Chex
You're welcome - glad to help :D
