Spybot search and distroy keeps finding problems in my HKeys_users (I can provide the full path if needed) after using regedit to make the fix provided it is not long (I have not determined the time frame) before the problem returns. I run Spybot every Tuesday and Friday and have to make the HKey changes every time. I am in my first quarter of school to be in IT so I have some of the understandding needed and can ask some of the other students that are ahead of me in class for help with what I do not understand. Also can I get rid of some of this stuff just to clear the clutter (ie:iTunes, most of the yahoo stuff )? I do manual updating, should I have anything schedualed?

  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
  • Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.

All most forgot…Thanks the new version of spybot did not show the dso in my hkeys! Thanks. As far as runing goes It has not seemed bad. I was jsut worried about the dso spybot kept finding. That does not mean that I think this is over just that I do not detect any problems. What do you see?
I should have explained that the DSO exploits were a known false positive with the old version of Spybot S&D. :)

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

O4 - Global Startup: Continue Setup.lnk = E:\Msminst\Setup.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZRfox000

Optional items to check with HijackThis.
Fix only if you or an administrator did not set this restriction in Internet Explorer or a program such as Spybot S&D wasn't used to set it.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Reboot the computer and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Let us know how the computer is behaving now.

My computer does not seem to be having any problems. :)
Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
