I've gotten the following application errors as well as a Dr. something postmortem debugger message. I keep experiencing problems w/Windows. It keeps freezing and forcing me to close. Any assistance will be appreciated. I'm not very good at this stuff.

Hi Madeline and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Sorry for the wait and the fact that I have to tell you this is a nasty trojan called Vundo. There is a fix but you must follow the instructions carefully. So you will know when the infections is gone is looks like this in your HJT log:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtuts - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll
You have a bunch of clutter in the log, R1 items that I will remove at the same time. You can click on those links to see what they do.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
    Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:

    Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtuts.dll

  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

  • Next you will see:

    Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\stutv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Looks like there's still a problem. When trying to fix the log in safemode I couldn't find the following lines:

Madeline, you are doing superb :thumbup: it is me who is messing up :( In my concern to get the trojanVundo information to you I missed the fact that your version of HJT is outdated. I need to view the log in version 1.99.1. You can update from within the software like this:
Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions. Or you can download from here: http://www.malwareremoval.com/downloads.html
As soon as you are updated, post a new HJT log for a final look.

I want to ask about this item:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
aol bundles it with other junk and most folks do not know they even have it. It is in the very least a resource waster, and I would be glad to help you rid yourself of the aol junk if you wish. I may make a few other suggestion for other items that are not malware at the same time. You may also look over your log and if you see anything you no longer use and wish gone, let me know.

Thanks, Phil. Here you go! I'm not sure what C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe is and if it's unnecessary I'd like to get rid of it. The only aol thing I use is IM. Beyond that, I have no need for anything else aol. Also, I'd like to get rid of mirc. I don't use it, I only downloaded it to get some info that I couldn't get anyway. And I would love your suggestions about anything else you think I should delete. Thanks again!!!

OK Madeline, Thanks for the new log. I will bet Viewpoint was bundled with aolIM, one of the reasons I will have no dealing with anything aol, that kind of business practices. It is also another reason to always take the time to read the EULA agreement. Once you accept it you also absolve them of any liability. What upsets me is these "legitimate" business don't say put a check in the box if you want the junk, you have to know to take the check out.
I must have looked at two many logs today but I can't see AIM or mirc? You can use Add Remove programs and if mirc is there, uninstall it along with these:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\acsd.exe

If you will not be using the AOL Service again, you can turn it off and delete it, or you can just leave it disabled in the event you do need it in the future.

Turn it off like this:
Disable the Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to AOL Connectivity Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

If you want it gone from the computer then do this:
Delete the Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type AOL Connectivity Service and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

If you uninstalled mirc, do a search for the folder and delete it if it is still there.

Last…To make sure nothing bad got into your System Restore folders that could reinfect you if you needed SR for a valid reason, we need to turn it off restart the computer then turn it back one. This will give you new clean files. Here are the Symantec instructions:

Your log looks great to me, you seem to do this well, I should mention that there are several free opportunities to learn how to remove malware available online where you can learn to help yourself or maybe even others.
