Rogue diallers\Modem hijacking

I was recently victimised by a criminal "rogue dialler" (as we call them in the UK) - also known as "modem hijacking", "dialer hijacking", etc. Using "Trojan Hunter" and "Spy Sweeper" I have removed around four trojans - neither of these two spotted all the trojans, so it's useful to have both (plus others too!) One trojan keeps reappearing when I dial up; it also disconnects me. I have a modem lock now - essential for those who still use a dial-up connection rather than broadband - and I get a message from "BT Yahoo! Internet" saying: Warning - Application blocked making silent call - C:\WINDOWS\svchos1at.exe - and I'm also disconnected.

A trojan keeps reappearing - trojan-backdoor-coworg . I delete it with "Spy Sweeper" but it reappears each time I dial up. "Trojan Hunter" doesn't seem to spot it. Here is my HijackThis log:

Hello John2041 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter')

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cpej.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xlso.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\twnm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\fw_304.exe

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Before replying, open Notepad < click Format and uncheck the option for WordWrap.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Thanks for your reply. Your help is much appreciated.

I've been having trouble getting into, and then staying in, Safe Mode on my computer. I'm taken out of Safe Mode either automatically or just after I click on my user name. Computers are full of surprises. I've many attempts I had to give up on Safe Mode.

However, I followed your instructions without using Safe Mode, ran the scan with HijackThis, checked the boxes you indicated, and clicked on Fix Checked.

I then set up my computer to show all files.

I was not able to find:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cpej.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xlso.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\twnm.exe

But I did find and I deleted:
C:\WINDOWS\fw_304.exe

Since I have done this things seem to be OK, and trojan-backdoor-coworg is no longer found when I do a sweep with "Spy Sweeper". The other problems seem to have gone too: I have not been bothered by any silent dialling and related disconnecting. So I wonder if my computer is in good health now!

What do you think?

Here is my new log as requested:

I couldn't find any information on this file. Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqtrfw.dll

If you still are unsure what this file is, please submit it to the following link for a scan.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Let me know what you find out about it.

Many thanks for your reply.

I couldn’t find C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqtrfw.dll
But I did find C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqtrfwa.dll

This seems a bit strange.

When I right clicked on the file and chose 'Properties', there was only one tab: ‘General’. There were no tabs for ‘Version’ and ‘Summary’.

‘Type of file’: “Application Extension”. ‘Opens with’: “Unknown application”.

Size: 0 bytes. Size on disk: 0 bytes.

Date created was 18th July 2005, two days before the first “rogue dialler” call from my computer. Is that just a coincidence, I wonder?

Resting the cursor against the ikon the size indicated 88 bytes.

I submitted the file to Virusscan.jotti.org and got this result:

“The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file”.

What do you make of all this?

Scan with HijackThis and click config than on the misc tools tab, select delete a file on reboot. Paste the bold text into the file name box and click open.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqtrfwa.dll

When it asks you to reboot, choose yes.

Registry Search
  • Download Registry Search by Bobbi Flekman and unzip it into its' own folder.
  • Doubleclick RegSearch.exe to start it.
  • Enter vqtrfw.dll in the search section (top) and click "Ok".
  • Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will be saved in the program's folder as well). Post this text.

Hi again,

I had a bit of a nightmare time with my computer after I did what you suggested with C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqtrfwa.dll

Afterwards, when I booted up, I got a message saying "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close, etc" - and then "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem, etc" - and these notices multiplied when I tried to drag them away, and kept re-appearing again and again whenever I started up my computer. My computer was 'freezing'. I was sometimes able to do a few things, however, as I'll be mentioning.

I even went out and bought another computer - but that's another story and - would you believe it - another problem! (Could even be a hardware fault. Thank you Fujitsu Siemens!)

Anyway, I'm up late and I decided to have another go with my other computer - the one you are very kindly helping me fix - and also decided to be bold. So I managed to do a scan with HijackThis (below) and simply clicked on 'this and that' in HijackThis (I've forgotten what) and deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqtrfw.dll (That's the one without the 'a' after vqtrfw).

I then turned off the computer, started it up again - and everything seems to be fine once more. Phew!

I assume that the file that I deleted was a trojan.

Anyway, here is my latest log:

Am I in good shape?

John
London UK

So I managed to do a scan with HijackThis (below) and simply clicked on 'this and that' in HijackThis (I've forgotten what) and deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\vqtrfw.dll (That's the one without the 'a' after vqtrfw).

I had you fix that item in post 4 of this thread but it was still present in the next log. The vqtrfwa.dll file must have been guarding the registry entry and removing it caused the problems you encountered.

I'm glad you were able to fix the problem. The new log is clean. :)

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "So how did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
