Hi Guys, You have an amazing board here and are doing a great job. I ma lately experiencing some "slowness" issues and even though I am pretty careful, here is my HijackThis log for your careful inspection. One interesting point is that I moved from IE to Firefox recently but it still says IE is my main browser :wtf: I also have serious doubts about O23 at the end of the list… _________________ Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 14:46:17, on 28-8-2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wltrysvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\bcmwltry.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\BCMSMMSG.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\QuickSet.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apntex.exe C:\Program Files\Santa Cruz Networks\vSkype\vSkype.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\WCESCOMM.EXE C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\ObjectDock.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\WCESMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OUTLOOK.EXE C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Documents and Settings\QWERTY\Mijn documenten\COMPUTER\HijackThis1991.exe

Skyfish,

Welcome to the forum, so sorry about the delay but we have been up to our ears in logs. If you have not resolved your issue and still need my assistance, please move HJT to its own folder and post a new log please. Run HJT to SCAN AND SAVE A LOG FILE and then when the log opens in Notepad, go to EDIT> SELECT ALL……EDIT COPY and then paste the entire log in one thread.

The last line in the 023's appears to be from your wireless network adapter, but after you post a new log I will look into it further.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Ken :D
Thanks a lot for your help, I could see you guys are super busy I hope I can help out one day too ;)

I put HJT in its own folder and here is what I got :

Hello Skyfish and welcome back to the forum, I'm glad we didn't lose you :D

I don't see anything earth shattering in your log so I would like you to make sure that you are running the latest version of Spybot Seach and Destroy 1.4, and I would like you to download, install and run the latest version of Ad-Aware SE Personal also from the links in my signature. Here are the setup instructions for both programs, make sure to reboot after running one program and starting the scan with another.

Please use the links in my signature to download and install both of the following free programs.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINENCE/ ADD-REMOVE
PROGRAMS
scroll to that program and click on REMOVE.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to MODE and click on ADVANCED MODE.
* Then to SETTINGS / FILE SETS and take the checkmark out of USAGE TRACKS.
* Then to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILE and then on the top click on ADD SPYBOT S & D HOSTS FILES.
* Then to TOOLS/ IE TWEAKS and put a checkmark in LOCK THE HOSTS FILES
* Then check for UPDATES.
* Then to Immunize. then up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on IMMUNIZE.
* Then go to the top to SPYBOT and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN.
* Then to FIX PROBLEMS and fix all it finds.

Then RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
* Choose PERFORM FULL SYSTEM SCAN
* Take the checkmark out of SEARCH FOR NEGLIGIBLE RISK FILES
* Run the scan
* When it is done, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE ENTRIES/ SELECT ALL/ NEXT and let it remove all that if finds.

Now run HJT Scan Only, close all open windows and your web browser and put a checkmark in the following lines and click on fix checked.

* R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
* R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
* R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

To be on the safe side, lets run a couple of online virus scanners, sometimes things hide from us. Run them both to Auto-Clean or Fix What they find.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

After you are done with the above, post a new HJT log along wth anything the virus scanners found and could not fix.

Ken :D
OK I have done all of the above (although I run both those softwares every month and I have Norton installed) and both Spybot and AdWare came out clean.

One thing though is that Norton was turned off after I ran HJT or Spybot so while I ran the free virus check I cought a few trojans <_<

Anyway my computer runs really nicely and here is my HJT log :

Hello Again Skyfish,

I don't see any evidence of a trojan or anything bad on your log. Both Trendmicro and Panda are very legitamite sites, it may have picked something up in a backup.

Do you use this program vskype ?, if not it is safe to delete with HJT.

Close all open windows and browsers and click on fix checked.

* O18 - Protocol: vskype - (no CLSID) - (no file)

If you can, post the log from Panda or Trendmicro and let me see what is up with it.

Here are some tips and free programs to install to help keep the bad guys out.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

*Run CCleaner, this is a very safe program that will clean out all the crapola on your system. It will also remove cookies,
so go to OPTIONS/ COOKIES and move the ones you want to keep from the left window to the right window.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
clean out your TEMP FILES

* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now, while in SAFEMODE,

* click on START/ RUN , and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses. GO TO EDIT/ SELECT ALL and delete all the contents of that folder.
* Do this for each user of your computer.
* Do this same process for %windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

Now we need to TURN OFF and then TURN BACK ON SYSTEM RESTORE.

This will remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent
any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points
which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.
* Now while in System Restore, create a new Restore Point.

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.
* If you want to use a free program, try this excellent one.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

* Run SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY 1.4 > CHECK FOR UPDATES > IMMUNIZE and run a full system scan on a regular basis.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

* Run AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL/ CHECK FOR UPDATES and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN on a regular basis.
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910…page&tag;=button

* Download and run SPYWARE BLASTER,
* Check for updates and enable all protection. This program will just sit in the background and help keep all the bad guys out.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

* Download and install WINPATROL
* This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

* IE-SPYAD is a one time install, it will put 1000s of bad sites in your IE Restricted Zone.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_down…23332&fileidx;=1

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/ GO TO PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Consider surfing the net with the FireFox Browser You can download via my signature.It has more features and is a lot
more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you
use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* There companion THUNDERBIRD MAIL program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,, this to has a good spam filter
and is more secure than Outlook Express.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

* Now go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFROMANCE AND MAINTENANCE/ REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good.
The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

* Last but not least, install this great free Firewall from Zone Labs.

I'll be waiting for the logs from Panda or Trendmicro to double check it for you.

OK back to my initial question : I have downloaded Firefox and installed it as my standard browser but HJT says I use IE : WHY ?????? I am not using IE except for a few pages that can only be read under IE. Please tell me how to change to Firefox for good :( Do I need to do the IE procedure of deleting Int temp files evn though I use Firefox ? I use vSkype its the best program for webcams but still in beta version (video edition of Skype) I ran TrendMicro and it took ages and found no virus : do you really want the logs ? I also have Norton running at all times… I think my computer is now running well except it takes a bit too long to start up to my liking… Thanks a lot for this great advice :D
Skyfish,

OK back to my initial question : I have downloaded Firefox and installed it as my standard browser but HJT says I use IE : WHY ??????

Open up Firefox and go to Tools> Options> General> Default Browser and make Firefox your default. Don't put the checkmark to check it or it will drive you crazy. IE and Netscape show up on the log so not to worry about Firefox, it will still be your default.

Do I need to do the IE procedure of deleting Int temp files evn though I use Firefox ?

Yes, do it one time and be done with it. You will find everyonce in awhile you will have to use IE to view a webpage.

I ran TrendMicro and it took ages and found no virus : do you really want the logs ?
I also have Norton running at all times…

No, only if you feel that they found something that it didn't fix.

I think my computer is now running well except it takes a bit too long to start up to my liking…

WinPatrol has a good startup feature. You may have to many programs running at startup, you can use WinPatrol to disable the ones that you don't really need starting.

Glad we could help, thanks for using Tom Coyote and thank you again for your patience.
