Even though I run Adaware (personal), Search and Destroy and manually (as well as automatically) run McAfee antivirus we picked up a nasty bugger on our home machine. I have a teenage son and plenty of friends of the family who get on and visit crappy sites.

I am running XP pro with an AMD processor. Can't remember model but machine is almost 3 years old.

Anyway. Here is my Hijackthis log. I am very greatful for help analyzing it and finding the bugs.

You guys are the best!

Please download VundoFix.zip to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.zip and extract it to your C:\ directory.
  • Copy the instructions below and paste them into Notepad for reference.
    • All other windows need to be closed while doing this fix!
  • Navigate to the new folder C:\VundoFix
  • Double click on KillVundo.bat
    • When it starts running it will tell you that you need an active internet connection then ask you to press any key once you do.
  • Please press any key to continue.
  • Wait for HiJackThis to open.
  • When HiJackThis opens, click Do a system scan only. Place a check next to the following items, if found:

  • Once they all have a check next to them, click the FIX CHECKED button, then close HiJackThis.
You will once again be prompted to press any key. Upon doing so this time you will receive a "Blue Screen Of Death". Don't worry, this is normal!

Let the computer reboot. If it doesn't boot straight to windows, manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Once the computer is rebooted post a new HiJackThis log as well as the contents of vundofix.txt which can be found in this folder: C:\VundoFix
Followed instructions.

Did not get blue screen of death, however computer was not responsive. I did have the desktop background but after closing hijackthis window and dos window I had to manually shut down computer.

Micah, again, thanks for your help.

Ad astra per aspera….

The log looks good!!!

How's it running?

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Almost forgot….

Please delete the offending DLL's if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\java\classes\dosdll.dll <– this one

C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\psad.dll <– this one

C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\srvjava.dll <– this one
Micah, I ran HJT again and the three elements you listed did not appear. The computer is running well with no offending pop ups at all. I will download IE-SPYAD and install it. I've tried to get the family to use Firefox instead of IE but some links open IE anyway. During this problem I downloaded and installed ewido and WFXScanR. Both are installed. Ewido loads and runs on start up. I also run adaware SE (personal) and search-and-destroy weekly plus a manual deep virus scan (mcafee enterprise 7.1.0). I have zonealarm personal firewall running. Are all of these necessary? Is some of it overkill? Since I've been careful about weekly scans we've been bug free until this most recent problem that you helped me with. None of the other three programs caught it (them..?) Thank you again very much. Its a great service you and your colleagues provide helping protect us average computer users from the bad-guys. Sincerely, Siestakey21 (Mark Pike, Streetsboro, OH)
