Hello scook19 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Is your Norton Antivirus up-to-date with the subscription and the latest virus definitions?

Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if present:

Sidefind
TV Media
Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker
Web_Rebates
VBouncer


Go here and follow the instructions on removal for TvMedia. Reboot when finished removing.


Reboot the computer and post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.

Norton AV was/is up to date. the only programs present I could remove were Sidefind and TV Media. Downloaded and ran the TVMedia removal tool and got the following message: "TVMedia not installed"

Rebooted and here is a fresh log:

Step 1
Disable the offending Service
  • Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
  • Scroll down to .NET Framework Service and right click on it.
  • Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
Delete the offending Service
  • Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
  • In the Delete window, type .NET Connection Service and press OK.
  • OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Optional items to check with HijackThis for improved performance.
You have P2P Networking on your computer. I recommend removing it along with the File Sharing program that it came installed with. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove the File Sharing program and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs…uninstall P2P networking…If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless File Sharing add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.

  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Step 5
Please download the trial version of Ewido security suite.

Install and Update Ewido:
  • Download and install Ewido security suite.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
    • The program will prompt you to update, click the OK button.
    • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed, close the program.
Scanning With Ewido:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  • Launch Ewido again.
    • Click on scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the boxes that say "Perform action on all infections"and "Create encrypted backup" then choose clean and click OK.
    • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
    • Click Save report.
    • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
  • Now close ewido security suite.
Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Followed all instructions, only had a few that kept recreating themselves so I had to delete in safe mode. kpkpfn.exe and vovoqk.exe came back even after safemode delete. downloaded and ran Ewido, it seems to have gotten rid of them. Here is the new HijackThis log. Thanks for the help. Seems so much better already. Let me know if you see anything else that needs removing.

Those files that came back were an old version of the Narrator Trojan. I haven't seen that one around in quite some time. :D That new log appears clean. How is the computer working now? If all is well, I'll give you some recommendations to better secure the computer.

All seems well, no sign of popups and performance is much much better. Thanks. So suggestions on better ways to secure this would be great.

Im curious about the pictures of the dogs in your signature. Pets? I hope they are just playing.

Yes, those are my two dogs playing. They look vicious in that picture but you couldn't find two more friendly dogs. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.


I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
