i dont know mach about this so please help me!!
Thanks
Alona – I'm back.

Okay, you have the Peper Trojan (among a bunch of other problems) and we'll tackle that first. It is a very stubborn infection which requires two different tools to remove. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

For the second tool:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Then reboot normally, and let's run a battery of general scans to give your system a "good scrubbing". Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

Now, let's take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai

Alona
Thanks Alona. Nice work getting rid of the peper trojan. :)

Your system is still heavily infected with a bunch of malware, so let's clean that up now.

Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". Open Windows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" option, and un-check "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files" options. Then click the "Apply To All Folders" button.

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

Be sure you are a user with administrative privledges.

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

Web Offer
EZ Web Offer
virtual bouncer
Vbouncer
AdDestroyer
EliteBar
SearchMiracle

3 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

wincfg32.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)
hyllpq.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)
tufocru.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)
sxvhost.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)
avttvrfy.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)

C:\windows\mActiveX.exe <– this file

C:\windows\system32\winbda32.exe <– this file

C:\Documents and Settings\AMBOY\Application Data\ndoo.exe <– this file

C:\WINDOWS\EliteBar\ <– this folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\ <– this folder

C:\Program Files\VBouncer\ <– this folder
C:\Program Files\Web Offer\ <– this folder

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

5 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Be double sure to include the user named 'amboy' in this process.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

6 – Then reboot normally, and let's run the following battery of general scans to give your system a "good scrubbing". Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

Whew :) Now, reboot normally, and we'll take another look at your system to see if any bad stuff has survived.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks

Alona
Alona…you did just fine. Great detail on your reply :) There's some more to do, and I'll post a response shortly after finishing my analysis. daveai
Thanks Alona. Your system appears to be much cleaner. Good work so far :)

First, your questions:

stage 4 didnt have wincfg32.exe but had wincfg32.exe-up and it ooked like a log file oratext file - i didnt delete it yet

Yes…delete the file.

stage 4 - ndoo.exe file was not int he folder yousaid its in c:\windows\prefetch - i didnt delete it yet

Yes…delete the file.

stage 5 all the temps were empty, does that make sence?! pluse i couldnt find any local seetting folders!

Hmmm….this is usually caused by either not having set the system to show hidden files, or not being in administrator mode.

stage 6 - scanning with spybot there are 5 entries that always apear again even after deleted under the name : dso exploit

This is a known reporting problem in Spybot S&D…don't worry about it.

i wasne clear onwhat you ment by being double sure to include the user "amboy" do i have to log in as amboy to the safe mode (since i logged in as administrator!!)

No, you should be able delete these folders (once you can see 'Local Settings') from 'administrator'.

If all else fails, you can log in as each username on the system and: Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

A question from me: Were you able to find and delete

hyllpq.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)
tufocru.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)

and

C:\Program Files\Web Offer\ <– this folder

Okay, let's do some more clean up:

Double check this: To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files".

2 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = http://www.adelphiapowerpage.com/

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Virtual System Monitor] hyllpq.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Internet Services] tufocru.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Iruw] C:\Documents and Settings\AMBOY\Application Data\ndoo.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eZWO] C:\PROGRA~1\Web Offer\wo.exe

And, this is an optional item you may choose to remove:

Office Startup Asistant is an optional item that if checked, will eliminate a known resource hog. You will still be able to start Office components from the Start menu. This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

hyllpq.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)
tufocru.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)

C:\Documents and Settings\AMBOY\Application Data\ndoo.exe <– this file

C:\Program Files\Web Offer\ <– this folder

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes, including any you cannot find.

5 – If you can see the 'Local Settings' folders in Windows Explorer, then do this again:

Use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes).

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

If you cannot see the 'Local Settings' folders, then log in as each usename on your system and do this: Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

Now, reboot normally, and send me another HJT log.

Thanks
daveai

Alona
Thanks Alona – I cannot find any malware in your logfile. Way to go :)

Now for my "prevention speech"…

Please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – Consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

It was a pleasure helping you.

Thanks and take care,
daveai
