hey everyone -

the past few days my computer has been running very slowly and the internet has also not been connecting, though it had been working previously. during one shut down a box came up saying that "MediaAccK.exe DLL initialization failed" and another time an error popped up regarding "wlarcfg5.exe". the ctrl+alt+delete buttons were also not working during this time.

today, it seems to be running a bit better and the internet is now working, but MediaAccK.exe is still on my computer and i was hoping someone could help me remove it. in addition, i am posting a hijack this log, incase anything else is on my computer that should not be. i already have ad-aware and spy-bot search and destroy on my computer. thanks for any help!

Hello Megan and welcome to TomCoyote forum. I noticed you posted for a friend here:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=42886 You friend has no Service Pack or Critical updates. You should have them address those issues, then post a fresh HJT log. This is my advice, if anyone starts with the post they may address the issues in a different manner.
__________________________________________________________________
Your Computer

You have a real variety on your computer, some adware and some trojan worms. You mention that you ran Ad-aware and Spybot. In item two of the process I will give you a link. Please use it to be sure you have Ad-aware 1.06, Spybot 1.04, that both programs are updated and configured as in the link. Then please run them again, Spybot first with a reboot before running Ad-aware. Please take your time and follow the directions carefully and in the posted order. If you don't understand something, post the question. Please proceed like this:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Open Add Remove Programs and uninstall Media Access and p2pnetworking (remove all Altnet componants if asked) if they are there. Also uninstall any programs you did not put there.

Open Task Manager then the Processes tab. Highlite and end process on:
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccess.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetworking.exe
and anything that looks like it may be associated with either.

***some items may have been removed by the scans***

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

ADW_POP.A: Grayware

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Media Access\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\winupdate\ >>> folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetworking.exe >>> file

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

7) Run CCleaner but be sure you backup the registry when prompted to do so for safety. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with the Ewido scan log this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Megan, when I give you links to stay clean and safe later, read them carefully. You do not have programs to stop malware and your Antivirus program can not do it.

Thanks…pskelley

PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam
i started going through the cleaning process, but am somewhat stuck at the ewido stage. when i run that scan, it finds over 8000 objects. is there any way to speed up the cleaning process so that i do not have to manually select "remove" 8000 times? thank you for your help thus far, i appreciate it!
Well, I have not heard of that many items before but since you are being prompted to remove each item that is how Ewido works. With that many items, I can only assume it is cookies. How long since you cleaned out cookies. If you removed a few you should have seen what they are. Do they say tracking cookies? The reason we run on manual is so you get to make the decision and if Euido should ask you to remove something you think is is good you have the option to not remove and check with me to make sure it is bad. I would like to shorten up the time but we really need a Complete System Scan so we can get to all bad stuff. You are following the instructions in order…yes. Did Ad-aware or Spybot remove a lot of cookies. Let's try running CCleaner first and have it remove as much as possible.

CCleaner: Open program and make sure the version is v122.142, then in the bottom right corner check for new updates. When this is done make sure everything is checked under the Windows tab but the Autocomplete Form History in the first three..Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer and System. Then click Run Cleaner and OK in the popup windows. This make take a while and it is going to remove a lot. Then click on Run Cleaner again and OK. Now click on the second tab Application. Use the default setting but be sure if you use Firefox/Mozilla that the first box is checked, then the next four to get those cookies. Then do the same as the last time. Now click on Issues, then Scan for Issues. When this scan is finished, click on Fix Selected Issues (make sure the boxes under the word "Problem" are checked) You will received a prompt to backup changes to the registry. It is important that you choose YES. Anytime you modify the registry always make a backup. Then choose where to put the backup, I suggest MyDocuments for ease of locating. Then save the backup. You will probably not need it, no one I have had use this utility has so far. Later, after you are clean and a couple of week go by, you can delete this backup. Careful to right click and choose delete. If you click or double click it will put the junk back in the registry and we sure DO NOT want that.

Now open Internet Explorer then click on Tools at the top and Internet Options. Choose the General Tab. Click on Delete Cookies. Then click on Delete Files. In the box that pops up put a check in the box "Delete all offline content" and click Watch the hour glass, when it goes away click on OK to close the window.

Here is some information for you to review later about cookies.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278835/EN-US/
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;EN-US;q283185

Next, I usually wait until we are clean to purge the System Restore files. By turned off SR restarting your computer, then turning SR back on this will clean out any bad stuff backed up in those files. We will also want to do this once more when you are completely clean of malware. Here are Symantec's instructions for doing this. It is important to turn it right back on after the restart:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Once this is all completed, then run the Ewido scan (make sure you updated it) and remove what it locates. Hopefully there will not be so much now. Remove anything it locates unless you have a reason to think it is not bad. I will see these items in the log when you post it. Then make sure you have followed all of the other instructions in item 4, 5 and 6 before posting the HJT and Ewido scan logs. Please stay in this same thread. Thanks.

I hope this helps…Phil
i went through and did what you said and this time i watched the ewido scan as it was going through my computer. around 90-91% it starts finding all of these trojans in my C:\uploads file. i was looking at the file names and i don't recognize or use any of these programs and this is where the 8000+ infections are coming from (it hadn't found any infections before it started scanning the uploads folder). i was wondering if it would be safe to delete everything in that folder and then try the ewido scan again?
Whoa Megan, This is a new one on me. I have Windows Xp also and I have no C:\uploads file and have never heard of it. Here is the google on it:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc…%5Cuploads+file I would say delete the folder and everything in it. This is your computer and you did not put it there, so get rid of it. Try to delete the whole folder at once. Let me know how it goes, this is a new one on me but we will defeat this stuff. :)

I've been at this since 5 AM so I am shutting down for the night. I will check for a response in the morning. :wavey:
deleting the uploads file worked wonders. then ewido only found one infected file and it was a cookie. here is the latest hijack this log and the ewido scan log.

thanks again for all your help!
Hi Megan, Good job of following the directions on your end  I would sure like to know what that folder and it's contents were. CCleaner probably cleaned the recycle bin, but if it is still in there, after a few days if all is running well, make sure to empty the bin.

I suggest you do this: Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
