Hello TCF!
I guess my luck has run out.
I've run Spybot and Ad-Aware religously. I have Zone Alarm. I run Norton AV Corporate edition on Windows 2000. I run Panda periodically. I run Mailwasher and pre-screen emails. Anything with attachments gets Panda'd before opening. I'm not entirely sure where this came from, but I do have an idea.
Spybot has shown Trek Blue Error Nuker (that says is fixed but keeps coming back) and Ad-aware listed the dreaded VX32, CoolWebSearch, and Advanced Search Bar. I have a lot of listings for Yahoo, but I don't use Yahoo. I have scans from each of these. I have been unable to update Ad-Aware because using their link for Home users leads me to a site for advanced care for the elderly. I tried to get their VX32 add on, but cannot get access to it. It appears that Lavasoft no longer offers its support forums, so I come to you for help. I am experiencing home page hijacking and pop-ups galore. So…here's my log…(the name you see is not mine, it is a combo of mine and my wife's). In advance, thanks for your help!

Make sure you check "AutoClean"

13. Reboot and post a fresh HJT log back here by using the add reply button below, and lets see how we did, MrC
Thank you, MrC. Wow, when I fall into the briar patch, I really fall in! Given my participation in an earlier office party, I think it wisest that I attempt all of this tomorrow morning! One question though…several times you mention palstart.exe. I thought this was a function of PalTalk, which is a communcation program / site. Am I mistaken or are they backdooring us, too?
I'm convinced. I'll do my best on the upload. Thanks again, and I hope I have you something good to look at tomorrow.
WOW! I knew this was going to take some time, but 31/2 hours! And I thought I was being vigilant.
MrC, your instructions were excellent! Thank you very much.
A couple of things before I paste the new HJT log. addsp.exe and atljh.exe were not running when I did the Task Manager. I did delete them both when I did step 5. All the R1s thta were fro dcfrr…12047 were gone, but were replaced with eqlpu.dll…12047 as you'll seen in the new log. I figured I should delete those, but thought it best to wait for you to tell me so. When I searched for the files in #5, iprq32.dll (or any other extension) did not show up. Also, when I searched for palstart.exe, it was gone as well. CWS did not find Cool Web Search. AboutBuster did not ask for a second scan. The only problem I had was with cleanmgr. It got hung up and would not complete. I tried to do it the old fashioned way (*.tmp and temp) in the search for files. Okay, so here goes the latest HJT and the AB log.

Thanks again for your help…and boy, do I have questions! :)
First things first…MrC deserves a raise, so I guess I'll have to find out how to donate! Now the questions…can I run EWIDO as a maintenance program like I do Spybot and Ad-Aware? Same question for CW-Shredder and A-B. What was HSfix for? What the h*** was Trek Blue Nuker? Can I use this last HJT as a base when I do future scans or would that be too risky? Since I probably don't qualify for the Classroom, is there a good remedial class somewhere? :weee: Again, many thanks!

Where did you get the Trek Blue Nuker from??

The HSFix removed the registry entries that were installed by this infection, you don't need it any more and should delete it.

AboutBuster I would not run again - this is a specialized removal tool.

The rest of them are good general malware tools.

Leave working with HJT to the experts - one wrong move and it's all over.

There's no qualifications to enter the classroom, everyone starts at zero knowledge and goes from there.
You just have to be an upright person eager to learn and help - so please apply.

I'll give you some preventive maintenance when we are done. MrC
Sorry about the delay, MrC. I'll remove the HSFix and AboutBuster this evening. I'm not sure where the Trek Blue Nuker came from. We haven't downloaded any programs to this computer in ages. I don't think it came from PalTalk, but I suppose it could have. With all the pop-ups that were flying, I guess I could have miss clicked on one. Knock on wood, I haven't seen a pop-up since we went through the steps. I ran Ewido once yesterday and it came back clean. I look forward to the start-up tips! It takes this thing about 6minutes to fire up and most of that seems to be waiting for ZoneAlarm to "initialize". Thanks, again!
OK - Good News!

Here's………

Some preventive maintenance:

Don't open e-mail attachments without first scanning them with an up-to-date
anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.

Disk Maintenance:

Make sure you clean up all the temp files frequently , I like this program: CCleaner
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html

Download, install and run it.
Use the default settings, just uncheck cookies.

————————————————————————
Clean up the registry:
I use RegCleaner, link below
http://www.capetechsupport.com/files/RegCleaner.exe
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/…-cleaner4.3.htm
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/…/regcleaner.exe

Download and install it.
Click on the RegCleanr.exe
Tools (at the top) > Registry Cleanup > Do Them All
Then 'Select' (at top left) > choose ALL
'Remove Selected" (at bottom right)
A backup of all that was removed will be made, just choose 'Backups' (top right) to view them, you can delete them when you're confident they're no longer needed.

Finally run defrag:
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
Here's an excellent alternative tool - Diskeeper Lite
http://www1.execsoft.com/dklite.exe
http://www.webattack.com/get/dkeeperlite.shtml

Good luck and thanks for using the forum - MrC

Thanks, MrC. All have been added to my Security file in favorites and I will return to them and add what I don't have. All seem most helpfull. I already have Firefox, just haven't gotten comfortable with it, yet. I'll return to these suggestions this weekend and add them to my arsenal! Again, my many thanks for your excellent assistance. I think you can probably close this puppy! Now…I gotta go find the school house…I think I've got a class I'd like to go to… :wavey:
