My computer is acting weird, and i have scanned it with Ad-Ware SE, Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Beta Anti Spyware and have Spyware Blaster running as well. I also run Panda Active Scan Pro and everytine I do this, it finds and removes "Ad-ware/exactsearch" but never really permanately removes it cause it is still there! I am pretty good with computers, and and can usually clean out or repair with no problems, but it seems that maybe now I have something hiding in my system that looks normal but maybe isnt? Also, lately when I go into spyware blaster to see if it needs an update, I am finding that 8 items have been disabled from protection. What could be disableing it? Could you please look at my Hijack log?

Thank you !

If you see something in this log that is something that in your opinion that should be removed, please let me know. :wavey:
Hi Jay, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. You log does not look to bad, there are a few items we can remove and a little cleaning will help. Please follow these directions:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Take the time to review the instructions on the download page so that when I ask you to run it you will know what you are doing.

2) I do need to mention that HJT needs it's own permanent folder. I have no objections to you calling the folder "computer stuff" just please store only HJT related in that folder, thanks.

3) Jay, this is mostly clutter with the exception of the grayware (adware) DPF. You will need to turn of Microsoft AntiSpyware and probably Spyware Doctor, due to the nature of the programs, they will block the HJT removal. You can start them again as soon as you are done with HJT.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

adware

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Optional check, if you wish to make sure nothing is hiding, it will take a long while on dialup, between 1 and 2 hours on broadband, your call
Let's check for trojans in case any are hiding, run this free online scan, scan the whole system and set it to clean or fix anything it locates. Let me know what it finds and the exact name and location of anything it locates but can't remove. You may be asked to install an ActiveX, please do so as this program is safe and it can not run without it.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let us know how you are running.

Thanks…pskelley

PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE: This is also optional in your case.
When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instruction:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Thank you so much for getting back to me on this, and I am sorry that I took so long with this reply. Moving and etc. soon, and way to busy!

Anyway, I did what you suggested and ran the http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and it did find a dialer, which I removed. Everything seemed to be going pretty well then this morning I ran my Microsoft anti spyware and it found a Possible Browser Hijack (browser modifier) and removed it. I ran Spyware Doctor and it found nothing.

I have run every program on my computer to clean and tune up. I have run HJT and here is my log.

I don’t have a problem with deleting anything on my computer that you would suggest. If I felt like it, I would just reinstall XP, but I don’t feel like reloading all my programs back on!

Thank you very much!!!!!

Hello Jay :)

Everything seemed to be going pretty well then this morning I ran my Microsoft anti spyware and it found a Possible Browser Hijack (browser modifier) and removed it

I am posting this for you so you will have a better idea of how the browser hijackers may be getting through.
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1579
Control of ActiveX is VIP and I am posting information below where you can see the suggested way to set the ActiveX controls. I do not run the Microsoft Beta tool and do not know enough to advise you about it or SpywareDoctor. The proof in their ability to keep you safe will be in if they do it, but if you are not configured properly we can't blame the tools. I personally run Spybot and the TeaTimer function or SpywareGuard for my realtime protection. Whatever works for you. I did look at your new log and I see two items that should be gone and are still there:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

Now since the other three items are gone, and these are browser plugins, I am going to say that one of your spyware tools is blocking the change. I would suggest you remove these two items by doing it in Safe Mode: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html In Safe Mode those spyware programs will not have started so just use HJT, check the two lines and "Fix" them.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Please let me know how it goes, post a new log for a finale look if you wish.

Thanks…Phil
