Hello, I began getting pop-up ads about 3 weeks ago. I do have pop-up blocker on all the time. I was using Adaware daily (sometimes 2-3 times a day if my kids are on the computer) as well as AVG Virus Scanner. I started getting a "search" pop-up window that seemed to be returning results based on web pages I was looking at. For instance, if I looked at a page about flowers this "search" window would pop up with links to flowers, seeds, gardening sites, etc. Adaware wasn't catching whatever it was causing this so I downloaded Counterspy a few days ago because I read on a forum that it was very good. After the first scan (in which it found lots of stuff) the computer was ok for about 15 minutes. Now, along with the orginal "search" window I am getting tons of of pop-up ads for casinos and spy removal software and such. I contacted counterspy support and they told me to contact you. So I ran Hijack this and have posted my log below. In addition to the pop-ups I am also beginning to get a lot of Nvidia errors and backweb errors (both things apparantely came with my HP computer). Last time this happened I had to eventually do a complete system restore, which I am hoping to avoid because it takes so long to reload all the programs.

I do have complete, up-to-date data backups.

Anyway, any help you can give is appreciated as well as tips/recommendations on keeping the computer safe.

Thanks so much,

Maria

Hello Maria and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do have some nasties and they are items I have not seen before, so we will learn how to remove them together. If that works for you, then here is some information about these worms for you:

Please let me know this is a valid program: C:\Program Files\USB Storage RW\udsi.exe if you are not sure check it here free:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustota...h/index_en.html

Your Backweb problem: BackWeb-137903.exe see this and let me know if you want it gone: http://castlecops.co...plist-1436.html Please note that after we linked to the truth at HP they closed the link so folks can't see the information. I'll schedule the removal.

ALCXMNTR.EXE optional fix see this: http://castlecops.co...uplist-180.html let me know.

See this: http://castlecops.co...list-11862.html
make sure you click the links to se what Troj/Perda does, it's a nasty.

http://castlecops.co...list-11592.html = http://www.trendmicr...BOT.BRQ&VSect=P
I would like to try Stinger on these worms, let me know if Stinger finds and kills any of them.

1) Downnload Stinger from here: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ update and run it, allowing it to remove anything it finds, post that information for me.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

4) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [filit] C:\Documents and Settings\Donna.THEMEINERS\foobar.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] windir32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] windir32.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML
(if you don't know why this next item is in your trusted Zone, remove it)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.af.mil
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.co...up1.0.0.8-2.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

This first item is probably running rom Prefetch or Temp. Please use Search Companion to find it to make sure it is deleted.

windir32.exe >>> file

C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe >>> file (just the file in red)

C:\Documents and Settings\Donna.THEMEINERS\foobar.exe >>> file

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html

7) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Thanks...pskelley

A few more questions for you:

1. Is the AVG free version adequate or should I use something else and if so what?
2. I previously removed spybot because it caused AIM to not work. Can I just use adaware and Microsoft AntiSpyware?
3. Should I set up CC Cleaner to run regularly (seems like a really cool program)
4. Can I uninstall Ewido now?
5. My computer still takes a long time to log on. Is that because I have too many start up processes running and is there a way to make it faster?
6. Any other suggestions to keep this computer running clean...keeping in mind that I have a teenager :)

Thanks again and have a great day!

Maria

Ok, I just learned something new. CC Cleaner is user sensitive. We have 3 users on this computer so I logged in under the other 2 and ran it again there. Found a whole lot more stuff. Also, so far I've noticed that I am no longer getting pop-ups but when I log in under my daughter, she still is. I don't know about the third user because we hardly ever use it. Should I log in under her name and go through the steps again?

Hi Maria, I'll do my best with this, but first want to say the blue is very hard for these old eyes on the blue background. I will work with it through, just use the normal black print from now on, thanks.
As I go throught this, if I agree with what you said I will give no comment, only where there is a reason to comment, hope that works.

ewido security suite - Scan report Created on: 2:29:10 PM, 11/16/2005

Look over this log to see where this junk is being stored so you can clean it with routine maintenance. Some nasty adware was removed and caution Mark as much of it is happening when he is is his user.
Watch areas like this: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\Quarantine\ <<< if you quarantine rather than delete, you want to clean out the quarantine area soon once you are sure it was a valid removal.

Same goes for here: C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 3:18:57 PM, on 11/16/2005

The log is clean, this item: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE can be removed by using HJT to check and remove the line, HJT is a process manager also, and removing it will stop the process so you can go to the file and delete it. I believe it will be in C:\Windows\ but I don't have it on my computer to check. To be sure use search companion first so you will know where it is, then remove the line, and navigate to the file and delete it. Be careful of the spelling, only that file should be removed.

Here are a few items you may be able to turn off in MSConfig to improve startup and save a few resources:

O3 - Toolbar: hp toolkit - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - C:\HP\EXPLOREBAR\HPTOOLKT.DLL
(if you use this toolbar, leave it alone, if not, remove it with HJT)
http://castlecops.com/clsid-889.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KYE_UDSI] "C:\Program Files\USB Storage RW\udsi.exe
(You established this is valid, but does it need to run everytime as it is? Might be worth investigating)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
http://castlecops.co...plist-2564.html

Not much there, I hesitate to stop items from running that may cause problem, and some items you have running I just can find enough information about to make a call. Here are some links if you want to investigate:
http://www.answersth...es/tasklist.htm
http://computercops....tartupList.html
http://www.bleepingc...r.com/startups/

You also may be running services you don't need, hard for me to know, but this information may help:
http://www.mvps.org/...02/services.htm
http://is-it-true.or...s/utips76.shtml

Your questions:
1) AVG is a good free program that I put on my sisters new Dell when she needed a free one. It is hard to call this, as I firmly believe an AV program that is well maintained and kept updated and run will do the job. The opposite is true also.

2) I am not yet familiar with MAS, it may turn out to be a great program but is still beta and going through changes. Look in the links I provide. I run Spybot but only as a passive program to clean adware, I use SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard as two of my lines of defence. I must also say I have never heard of aim having an issue with Spybot. I don't use aol software, but you might register free and ask the question here: http://forums.spybot.info/index.php

3) Your call, it should be checked for updates often as they do update a lot. I run it when I check and update, usually every other month or so. What ever feels good to you. I would run Ad-aware weekly especially since Spybot is not onboard.

4) You can uninstall ewido when ever you wish. I myself turn off everything and disable the service, then I use the scanner manually after a free update. It is yours to do with as you wish, you just lose all realtime protection after the trial. I should also say it is a resource user and will slow your computer down while you are running the complete Security Suite.

5) malware will slow you down and we have addressed that. There are so many other thing, maintenance being the biggest. Here are a couple of links I use, perhaps they will help:

6) http://vlaurie.com/c...s/runbetter.htm
http://www.linkgrind...rs_article.html

7) The information in the links will help and this information, Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.o...topic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas....re/allclear.htm
http://forum.malware...wtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingc...topict2520.html

Yes, I should see a log while signed in to each user. Mark the log clearly so you will know it. The temp files in each user should be watched closly, if a bad item comes it it often will run from temp or prefetch to avoid detection.
Thanks and I hope this information helped...Phil

When we are all finished, use this information to clean System Restore and new files:

Thanks for replying again Phil,

I'm still getting pop-ups this morning....grrrr!

So here's what I've done.

Removed ACLXMTR.EXE per your instructions and also disabled hp toolkit as we never use it.

Uninstalled Counterspy because the free trial was up and it wasn't all that impressive.

I'm going to run Adaware and MAS for now. The problem I had with Spybot was that after running the immunization utility (this was a while ago) my AIM stopped working. I'll leave Spybot on there but probably not run it so much. MAS is running and active all the time.

As far as running these programs, I run AVG every morning and AdAware at least twice a day unless no one is using the computer. We always check for updates before running anything. I also have everyone emptying there temp files and cookies (through IE/tools/options) at least once a day.

Having said that, here are the individual user HJT logs:

I can see some stuff, I need to be out for an hour or so and will look the logs over and respond as soon as possible...Phil

Donna has the nasties, use search companion to locate this: windir32.exe you must find it, you should enable hidden files. This is the WORM_RBOT.BRQ You can try running Stinger while signed in to her user. It may be running from temp files in her user.
This: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [services32] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\mc-110-12-0000080.exe is probably this:

Clean log

Marks log has adware in it, but I do not think they will cause popups. The real issue is Donna's log as that is two trojans and probably where your popups are coming from. Once again I suggest you review what information I posted earlier about these two trojans to see what damage they may have done to your system, and you might learn how they got onboard for the information also.

I don't need to see your log again, but I would like to see both of the others.

Thanks...Phil
