Computer is slow - printer takes 10-15+ minutes before it prints, internet auto dials even though that feature is unchecked in options. Task manager says CPU usage is 100%. Search 200 has invaded IE browser and added favorites that I can no longer delete. I've scanned with Norton, Pest Patrol and Ad Aware. Please help!
Thanks ~Pam

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. MOVE (drag-and-drop) HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

c:\documents and settings\pam\application data\bodysc~1 <— FOLDER

c:\documents and settings\stepha~1\application data\fivesu~1 <— FOLDER

c:\windows\system32\synceng.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

Task manager says CPU usage is 100%

If the above fixes don't help the CPU usage, try this:

on the Incredimail icon in the system tray, and choose "Exit"

Then check the CPU usage. If it's down to normal, uninstall Incredimail (then reboot).

I had to do that on a family member's PC to get the CPU to straighten up.
:)
Dear Micah_6:8

Thank you for your response. I did as you said and my resulting log is attached. This did seem to clean up my IE, no more extra browser stuff, and it cleared out all the extra 'favorites' I couldn't get rid of. The CPU usage is still at 100% though, even when I exit Incredimail. (I noted below a few questionable items.) Any other ideas? Thank you so much for helping me fix my IE. Pam

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ryieaxsmwnbgktul.com/GbA2Xl3Hfw…\documents and
I didn't see this one when I did the 'system scan'.

settings\pam\application data\bodysc~1 <— FOLDER I deleted this one, but there is also the same folder in Stephanie's Application Data

c:\windows\system32\synceng.exe <— file I couldn't find this file, even when I did a search (found the'.dll' extension, not the '.exe').

The LOP infection you have still persists…. <_<

Sometimes Mr LOP can be a tough customer….

Let's try s slightly different approach before we go to the next level

Boot in "safe" mode, FIRST.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.gddrlrpysgtgj.com/GbA2Xl3HfwU9P…UK2Phwgs7Rl.jpg

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4B4536B4-134E-18BB-BECA-645C99067E6E} - C:\DOCUME~1\christy\APPLIC~1\FIVESU~1\dent phone.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Beep 16] C:\DOCUME~1\pam\APPLIC~1\BODYSC~1\mp3 second.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\christy\APPLICATION DATA\FIVESU~1 <— FOLDER

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\pam\APPLICATION DATA\BODYSC~1 <— FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

I see "Christy", and "Pam", and you say there's a "Stephanie" as well?

Please log on to each account, make a log file, and post it. :)
Dear Micah_6:8

Thank you again~that made a big difference, boy that LOP fouls things up! I have 4 different users on this computer, and all but my account are working significantly better, the CPU usage goes up and down now as it should. When I print something, the CPU maxes out for a few seconds, I don't know if that's normal or not, but then it goes back down and prints within 1 minute. The CPU usage on my desktop however is still maxed out. I changed the view on the Task Manager so I can see the 'kernal' usage also, which does fluctuate, mostly low, but the green line is flatlined at 100%. I again tried exiting Incredimail, but that doesn't appear to make any difference. The other problem I am having, which is a newer development, is the internet keeps automatically dialing up, and I have all the settings set up not to auto dial. I really appreciate all the help you've given me so far, it's really made a difference! :)
~Pam

Here are the logs for all 4 users:

Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ngbtlmgwrqoddgqibfkvgip.org/wuo…zNi7Q/nTBy.html

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Beep 16] C:\DOCUME~1\STEPHA~1\APPLIC~1\BODYSC~1\mp3 second.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\STEPHANIE\APPLICATION DATA\BODYSC~1 <— FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

I don't see anything that jumps out at me to make the CPU usage go up.

See if the above fix makes any difference.

I would also recommend using Spybot and Adaware.

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

I'm at work now, but will look the logs over in more detail this evening.

There are programs running that you can live without. I'll post some of the things you can get rid of this evening. Maybe that will help.
:)
I checked all 4 logs.

Once you get Steph "un LOPped", things are looking good.

I see three things you all can live without:
(these are "optional" fixes)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\evntsvc.exe -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

Those can be "checked", then "Fix checked" with Hijack This! (then reboot).

I don't know if you'll have to do logon and do that for each user (if you decide to), or if "one fix fixes all".
:)
:D Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! The lop stuff you had me remove cleared up the IE problems and the CPU usage on all but my account. 2 of the items you told me I could get rid of as an option, immediately fixed the CPU usage, and after I restarted the computer my internet no longer continually dialed itself up. Thank you sooo much. :D :D I know this took alot of your time, how do I donate, etc?

These are the 2 items that did the final fix (removed at the same time, so I don't know if it was one or both of them):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\evntsvc.exe -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

One more question~I do have Ad Aware (the free version), Pest Patrol and Norton Antivirus. You said on your last post to install Ad Aware and Spybot. Is it best to get the full version of Ad Aware, and should I also add Spybot (free download or paid?) and not renew Pest Patrol?

Thank you again ~and God bless you!
(And yes, we three girls keep daddy/hubby pretty busy!) :)

Just a word of caution.

Sometimes these entries may reappear:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\evntsvc.exe -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

They may reappear if you use the Real plugin, or the QuickTime plugin when viewing a web page with IE.

So, if your system slows down again, you can always run Hijack This! and fix those items (then reboot).

Pestpatrol is a good program. Renewing it is at your option. I've not used it, nor do I know anyone that has.

We always recommend the free versions of Spybot and Adaware here on this forum. Getting the "paid" versions would be at your discretion. I don't personally know anyone that has the "paid" versions of those either.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific that that.

I DO highly recommend you do ALL of the things in my list of things to help prevent future infections. They're all pretty simple and free.

Doing the "Browser Check" and installing IE-Spyad will go a long way to help preventing infections while surfing.

I am glad the forums here at TomCoyote.org were able to help you.

May GOD richly bless you and yours!!!

M68 :)

P.S. - Please post a new log file from Steph's login so I can be sure you got it all.

P.S.S. - Around our house it was "Girls! Girls! Girls!" as well, but it was Mel, Jess & T

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
