Hi,

I have been having problems with IE Explorer v. 6.0.2800.1106.xp2040919-1003. It takes a while for the web pages to load or I get "cannot display page" message. I have run adware and spybot and everything is clean. I thought it was my broadband connection but another computer in the house runs fine. The following is the hijackthis log. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello zaistlin, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you are still looking for help I will see what I can do. Please follow these directions. I will get some malware off of your computer and we will see what happens.

Desktop\HijackThis.exe: Would you put a folder around this HJT.exe. RIGHT click a blank spot and make a NEW FOLDER. Move the HJT.exe and any logs there into that folder.

Open HijackThis and click on SCAN, put a check in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"
Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Stay in this same thread, use ADD REPLY not new topic. Post a new log along with any feedback you think I should have.

Thanks…pskelley

PSKelley,

I followed your instructions and my problems are still present. As before, things run ok once the temp files are erased. But after some browsing, my problems are back. Regardless, here is a new HJT log:

Well zaistlin, Would you say things are no worse than they were? I need you to let me know when (if) you remove something and it returns in the next log. Several items slated for removal are still in the log, I do not know if you missed them or not.
I would like you to follow these instructions:

1) Click on Start then Run, type: sfc /scannow in the command line, please note the space before the slash. Have your Windows XP CD ready in case you need it, allow this to run until complete.

2) Download CWShredder from the following link, save it to your desktop. Open it, update then choose FIX not scan. Allow it to run and let me know if it locates anything.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popu…WShredder.shtml

3) Follow these instruction to enter Safe Mode for your Operating System:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html

4) once in Safe Mode, Open HJT and choose SCAN. Check the box in front of these lines and click on "Fix Checked" I will be removing all Downloaded Program Files, if they are valid you will be prompted to download the cab files again the next time you visit the site.

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Post a new log along with any information I requested or you think I should have.

Thanks…pskelley
Yes, pskelley, things are not worse than before. I did everything you said in your first post and followed up with the additional instructions that you provided. I had already ran the sfc / scannow before your post and things stayed the same. CWShredder did not find anything. I ran HJT in safe mode and removed what you instructed me to remove. The following is the latest HJT log:

I see two of the lines refuse to be removed even in safe mode: R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = You can try again if you wish, sometimes removing them a couple of times in safe mode will do it. I do not see them as a threat, just clutter. I can not find any information about this item: O23 - Service: Syobirtpcnh - Symantec Corporation - (no file) Even though it mentions Symantec, I just have a gut feeling it would identify if it was valid. Try a google search yourself, you will see what I mean. Would you do a little searching to see if you can find out anything. This would be about the only thing your could search for: Syobirtpcnh. You can even call or email symantec for information or ask a tech in chat. Once we know it is bad we can use HJT to remove it. Let me know what you find out. I see nothing else in the logfile to indicate any malware issues. Thanks…pskelley
I haven't found anything on Syobirtpcnh - Symantec Corporation . I have decided to reformat my drive anyways. I would like a fresh clean install before finally upgrading to SP2. Thanks for all your help pskelley….
OK zaistlin, That is certainly an option. This was a strange situation and it may be that you have a hidden issue of some kind and we would then have been at the beginning of our search. If you are updating to SP2, here is some information you should have. I do not know if the CD is still available but I will include that link also.

What you should know

Some information that may keep you from future issues. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
