Hello-

Please help me out with this problem. Somehow or another, we've downloaded MyWay. Whenever I use the address bar to search or enter a non-existent website, instead of going to the MSN search engine, I'm redirected to http://speedbar.myway.com.

I've downloaded and run the Norton Internet Security 2005 suite, Microsoft Antispyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition, and Spybot Search & Destroy. I've also downloaded and installed (?) the HOSTS file available through the komando.com website. None of these seem to have caught this program, although the new HOSTS file makes a "Page cannot be displayed" message appear rather than actually redirecting me to the myway.com page.

Thanks for all your help! Here's my log:

Hello, alsocom,

Thank you for replying. I've been looking at this site and can see how busy all of you are, so I really appreciate the reply. I've pasted my most recent HJT log below. I'm still having the same problem, that a search in the address bar tries to reroute me to http://speedbar.myway.com rather than to the default MSN search engine. Ive tried changing the default setting in the MSN anti-spyware program, but that doesn't seem to help. At least the HOSTS file blocks the site, but I still worry about information going out.

Just as a matter of interest, the HOSTS file I downloaded was obtained from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm.

I'm faithfully rotating between updated anti-spyware programs, running at least one a day, but nothing seems to be catching this bugger. Any help you can provide will be much appreciated!

Thanks again!

Linda55

Hello Linda55 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

O15 - Trusted Zone: www.lungnet.org
<< Fix if you did not place this site into the Trusted Zone of Internet Explorer.

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove the following items (if found):

My Search Bar
MyWay Speed Bar
My Web Search Bar

Step 3
Please delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi, alsocom, Thanks for your prompt reply. I've done all that you requested except reboot, which I'll do after you answer this question. When I went into Add/Remove Programs, I didn't find any of the files listed, but I DID find My Way Search Assistant. I'm assuming that should also be removed? Thanks! Linda55
Hi, Alan When I tried the Add/Remove Programs, I received the following Rundll error message: Error loading c:\PROGRA~1\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\desrcas.dll The specified module could not be found. Is that because I already deleted it in c:\Program Files? Thanks! Linda
Remove uninstall entry with HijackThis
  • Open Hijackthis and click None of the above, just start the program.
  • Click Config… < Misc Tools < Open Uninstall Manager.
  • Scroll down to the My Way Search Assistant entry and click on it once, then select Delete this entry.
Hi, Alan,

I rebooted, and my new HJT log is below. I have the MSN search engine back again, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware has the correct search page in its Default Search URL setting (I forgot to mention it wouldn't allow that to be changed)!

Thanks for all your help. From looking over other posters' problems, I realize this one was small potatoes, but I appreciate your time.

Linda

Thanks for all your help. From looking over other posters' problems, I realize this one was small potatoes, but I appreciate your time.

It is almost relaxing working on issues like these as some of the more difficult infections can get very frustrating for both the helper and the victim. :)

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
