Hello,

I think my Internet Explorer browser was hijacked. About every 30 minutes, a popup window opens and just instantly closes on its own. Then when I'm doing a search on Yahoo, when I click on the yahoo link, it takes me to different website than what the link is supposed to take me.

Some websites won't even come up because the browser redirects automatically, for example, when I type in the address bar www.example.com, it may take me to a porn site instead.

I've read many people with these problems, but rather than try and fix it on my own, I'm here to ask for help from a professional.

I've pased my hijack this file below.

Please tell me how to get control of my browser back.

Thanks,
Jim

Hello,

After reading through many topics, I found out some
of the culprits.

I used HijackThis and removed the ones I were sure of.
I deleted ChangerBHO, Contextual Ads, and SpoofBHO.

I can now type anything I want on my IE browser and I
go there without getting redirected instantly to unwanted
sites.

However, the problem with a constant pop-up window every
time I open a new browser or when I open a new tab is still
there.

So there's something I've missed.

Below is my new HiJackThis Logfile.

Could you please help me?

Thanks
Jaime

Hello Jaime and welcome to the forums. Sorry for the delay in getting to your post.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: Clicker Class - {631f7200-642e-11db-bd13-0800200c9a66} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscoriezb.dll
O16 - DPF: {7C559105-9ECF-42B8-B3F7-832E75EDD959} - http://www.tbcode.co...006_regular.cab

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Please also post a new HJT log and let me know how things are running now.

Regards,
Dave

EDIT: Can you also post a uninstall list from HJT:1. Open HijackThis and click on the Config... button in the "Other stuff" section (lower right hand corner).
2. Click on the Misc Tools button.
3. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
4. Click on the Save list... button.
5. Save the file uninstall_list.txt to a convinient location. This should open Notepad with the list.
6. Please Copy and Paste the list into your next reply.

Hi Dave,

I'm puzzled, I have Norton Antivirus constantly updated and it does a full system scan once a week, why would that "high priced" software not detect the 87 viruses, trojans, and downloaders that a simple "free" software was able to detect? It just doesn't make sense, does it?

Anyway, I restarted the computer, opened this browser and so far, I've not had any unwanted popup windows nor redirects. So far, so good.

I will paste below the requested logs starting with HijackThis, then the DrWeb report, and finally the Uninstall list generated by HijackThis.

Hi Jaime,

I'm puzzled, I have Norton Antivirus constantly updated and it does a full system scan once a week, why would that "high priced" software not detect the 87 viruses, trojans, and downloaders that a simple "free" software was able to detect? It just doesn't make sense, does it?

Oh boy don't get me started on Norton...I'll give you a couple of suggestions on free permanent solutions after you are all clean and updated.
Also, most of what Dr.Web found is in your restore points. Which I will also advise you to clean out when we're done.

I've noted a couple of other things for you to be aware of and since I don't see any spyware protection in place I recommend you run another scan with AVG (see below).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (12.6 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.

Hey Dave,

Holy Smokes! I had no idea that my pc was infected with so much junk!

I've done everything precisely as you asked me and the AVG scan took the whole night. I couldn't dare post the scan results here because it's a file with over 3,000 lines of quarantined items!

So what I did was to upload it to one of my websites. Here's the link:

So how does it look doctor? Are we close to a clean bill of health?

Oh boy don't get me started on Norton... I'll give you a couple of suggestions on free permanent solution after you are all clean and updated.

Don't forget on your suggestions that you mentioned above. I'm definitely interested on what you recommend. :)

Once again, thanks Dave for everything you do here.

Sincerely,

Jaime Ojeda

Hi Jaime,

Wow, thanks for having the insight to not post that log on here. That was alot of stuff. Your HJT log looks clean to me.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here is a list of some free and evaluation versions to try: AVG AntiVirus
Avast Antivirus Home Version--Free
Online Scanners:
Trend Micro Housecall
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall.Kerio Personal Firewall
