I have run Norton Anti Virus 2005, Spybot, Adaware, and Xoftspy. All programs capture threats, however, the same threats continue to return even after I deleted them from the quarantine area. All spyware was updated and run and the computer restarted before running hijack this. I am unable to access the control panel or get microsoft updates. I receive pop ads even though Norton block pop ads is checked. At start up Internet Explorer is displayed with the wrong home page (about.blank). I need help. The log is pasted below. Thank you.

Hello Mothership and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

The infection you have morphs almost everytime the computer is reboot, so I will need to see a fresh HijackThis log before recommending a fix. But first…..

Move HijackThis to Permanent Folder:
HijackThis needs to be placed into a permanent folder as it creates backups of everything fixed and you won't want these on your desktop.
  • Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
  • Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
  • Move HijackThis from the desktop into this new folder.
Post a new HijackThis log as a reply to this thread. I'll receive an email notification of your reply and will have a fix for you soon after. Make sure not to reboot the computer after posting the HijackThis log.
Hello,
Thank you for your reply. :)
Below is the log file dated 4/20. I will not reboot the computer. I was not able to access my computer. The computer is so broken that I don't have access to some programs. :( I did save this on my desktop for now.

HijackThis will work from the desktop, but don't be alarmed if it creates another file/folder there to store the backups.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.

    • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
  • Disable the offending service.
    • Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
    • Scroll down and find the service called : Network Security Service
    • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.

Hello,
Thank you. I initially saw some improvements. :)

Below is the fresh HijackThis log. I forgot to save the AboutBuster log but I did write down the information and have that below the Hijackthis log.
Here are the the problems I encountered during the procedures you suggested.
1. I was able to download Aboutbuster but not able to open the folder. My computer froze and I have to reboot.
2. I again attempted to extract About Buster and my computer froze.
3. I was not able to reconfigure Window XP to show hidden files. No access to My Computer or Windows Explorer. During this two attempts the computer froze again and I had to reboot.
4. After the last reboot. I could no longer find Network Sercurity Service.

Once in Safe Mode
1. CWShredder (V2.12)could not complete its scan. I received the error message "CWShredder has encountered a problem and needs to close. Microsoft Report option. I tried twice.
2. I extraced the AboutBuster (V4.0) in safe mode.
3. I could only find four of the files in HijackThis:
08 - Extra context menu item>>> HARDCORE MOVIES<<< ….
016 - DPF:{22a88341-AFCB-45FO-A856-C2BAE74F878E}
016 - DPF:{CFCB7308-782F-11D4-BE27-000102598CE4}
016 - DFP:{D6FCA8ED-4715-43DE-9BD2-2789778A5B09}
This were fixed or removed.
4. I could only find one file of the four to delete. The file deleted was C:\\Windows\system32\javaiv32.exe
I was able to get into "My Compter" in safe mode so I reconfigured windows to show hidden files.

Back in normal mode
1. I was not able to download TrendMicro Housecall. I received this error
"Internet Explorer has encounted a problem with an add-on and needs to close. the following add-on was running when this problem occured:
File winge.32.dll

Questions:
I noticed cwservicemove.zip is gone. Should I redownload?

I am concerned that my files are still not hidden not that I am back in Normal mode. Should I hide them again?

You used an old version of CWShredder. Please download the version 2.14 from the link in the instructions.
You may as well leave the hidden files shown until the fix is complete. Please do not remove any files without being instructed as many of these that are now showing are critical system files.
Make sure to save the AboutBuster log this time as I need to see it.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
Wow!! I can see a difference. I can get on to my home page and access other programs. However I still have the SAHAgent threat.

Below is a copy of both the HijackThis log and the AboutBuster log. Plus what I encountered while following your procedures.

1. CWShredder removed CWS.Homesearch and asked me to reboot. I did reboot to safemode and ran CSShredder again. The second time it was clean.
2. The only file I was able to find under HijackThis was R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing. I checked it and it was deleted.
3. Both files under Windows/system32 were not found.
4. Services.msc stayed stuck in the run field. I could not type over it or delete it. I rebooted into safemode and tried again. When this was not successful, I went through system tools and cleaned out the temporary files.
5. I can Symantec Security Check which found 82 threats. RAV ONline was not able to clean the threats or viruses. Pandasoftware would not disinfect the threats. Trend Micro could not disinfect and found only trojans - 22. I ran Bitdefender. I ran Norton Anti Virus and it deleted five threats.
6. I ran Bitdefender. It disinfected some, however I unchecked delete I unchecked the option to delete file if not able to disinfect. Should I run this program again and check delte file if not able to disinfect?

Thank you for your help. :) What do I need to do next?

P.S. What do I do with swswerviceremove.zip?
That log looks much better.

6. I ran Bitdefender. It disinfected some, however I unchecked delete I unchecked the option to delete file if not able to disinfect. Should I run this program again and check delte file if not able to disinfect?

Yes.

You can delete the cwsserviceremove.zip.

Step 1
Download the free trojan scanner A2 Squared, update and run a scan with it. Fix anything found then reboot when completed.

Step 2
Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version (Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3), than run scans as described below. (Instructions by dgosling)

Scanning With Spybot S&D;:

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D; accepting the Default Settings.

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D.

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9.REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.

10. Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.

Scanning With Ad-Aware SE:

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window.

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window.

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’.

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.

Step 3
Please post a new HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
Your procedures have made a dramatic improvement in the performance of the computer. Thank you. :D

Below is the new hijckthis log and what I encountered while following your procedures.

1. While in Ad-aware SE I was a bit confused on the procedures. Under Logfile Detail Level (all green) it says DESELECT. I changed the color to red. It was green. Under Alternate Data Streams I made green "Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes and Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT.
Was this correct?

2. Under Cleaning EngineLet Windows remove files in use at next reboot was in green and so where three other lines. I left them green. I did the same thing under the Log Files with the exception of Include Module listin logfile which I unchecked to red. Was this correct?

3. Ad-Aware SE did not delete all the malware. I had to do it manually. The entries were quarantined. Did I do this correctly?

4. I noticed that many of the files delted through these programs were in restore files.

What are my next steps?
Do I hide files now?
Do I change Ad-Aware SE back to it default scan?
What programs that I have downloaded should I keep and run on regualrly?
What do you suggest I do to increase my protection?

Again, Thank you for all you valuable help.

:)

You did everything correct. :)

You can now re-hide the files.

For the Ad-Aware scan settings, this is up to your preference. I personally have them set exactly like the instructions in my previous post.

You may remove AboutBuster and cwsserviceremove.reg as they are no longer needed.

As for Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D, I recommend checking for updates and running scans with them at least every two weeks. More often if you are on the Internet a lot.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
:D Thank you for all your help. I appreciate the time you spent helping me regain use of my system. As a newbee, I had a positive experience at this forum and will recommend it to others and mention the donation. Thanks again. :wavey:
Your welcome. Glad to be able to help you get your computer running better again. :)
