I was downloading something the other day and suddenly a norton popup came up saying 'a recent attack on yr comp has been blocked'. This now pops up every minute at least.

Hi savvy,

Please download NoLop to your desktop from here or here
  • Close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
Your computer will now be scanned for infected files
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish
  • Please post the contents of C:\NoLop.log in your next response
If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx and copy it into your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder then rerun the program.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the NoLop report, the uninstall log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi savvy,

First, some uninstalls to consider:

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs and remove:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You have Azureus, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Azureus via Add/Remove Programs.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Boob Idle Software Acid] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Part Long Boob Idle\Close Download.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [amok option dent acid] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ELSE LOUD ACID PART\DOES DRIVE 2.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [grey upload] C:\DOCUME~1\ANDREW~1\APPLIC~1\GREATE~1\internetbleh.exe

Your AOL Toolbar appears to have been uninstalled, if this is the case the you can also check these lines:

O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing)

You have several Sony-related domains in your Internet Explorer Trusted Zone. These aren't malicious websites, however the security settings which apply to websites that are in the Trusted Zone are much more permissive than normal, so sites should only be added if they are trusted and if it is necessary. If you need to keep these domains in your Trusted Zone so that they function normally then leave them in place, otherwise please check these lines:

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sony-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sonystyle-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vaio-link.com

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, reboot your computer normally.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Now use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Part Long Boob Idle
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ELSE LOUD ACID PART
C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew Savin\Application Data\Great Eggs Bird

If you have trouble deleting any of these, please let me know in your next response.

Then, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log.
Hi Silver I followed your instructions up till Kaspersky Online Scanner which I didn't have to do as the pop up stopped. I'm not sure whether the old java was the problem or one of those odd named files that you had me delete. Everything seems back to normal thank goodness. Thanks very much for your help Cheers Savvy :D :D :D
Hi savvy, I'm glad to hear the popups have stopped :) While the symptoms have stopped, that doesn't necessarily mean your machine is clean and a general scan will help us make sure there isn't anything else lurking around. I recommend you go ahead with it and post the results so I can look them over. It is of course up to you but please let me know how you wish to proceed.
