OMG I have no idea wtf my kids and husband have done to my comp but besides the god awful 680180.net pop ups which kill my internet explorer I can not even get into msn or messengers any more. I have run norton.. deleted that and tried pc-cillian trying to find a virus and spybot and pest patrol to find adware and it keeps finding stuff but not completely deleting it. HELPPPP
here is my log… i REALLY hope someone can help me figure out whats going on and save me from having to crash and reformat my comp.

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

You really should go here and update your Windows and IE to SP1 (NOT SP2!).

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates. Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well). Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES. Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED. When it's finished, REBOOT your system.

Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, ALWAYS check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware. THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings.
To scan, click NEXT. This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say YES to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?" Reboot again.

Post a new log file in this thread. :)

There will be some cleanup to perform.
I did the spybot and ad-aware. I could not get microsofts page to load.. it kept giving me errors. So I still have SP2.
Here is my new hijack log

Thanks again for all this help.
Pamela
OOPS!!

I've been missing one fix.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND PROGRAMS!!!

Fix this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysmgr32] sa2

Reboot and post a new log file.

If that stays gone, and nothing new shows up, you should be "good to go". :)
Well it appears to be all fixed as far as the pop ups and that AWFUL 680180.net thing. I still can not seem to access microsofts update webpage though… keeps telling me there was an error. I also still can not sign into msn messenger, hotmail account, or msn explorer (use both IE and msn explorer to surf web). I am not sure if the microsoft error and hotmail/msn errors are related to each other and something else in the log that needs fixed? I even redownloaded messenger and it didnt help, emptied cookies and temps, tried to change password (got page can not displayed , the same as when I goto log in). Yahoo seems to be working just fine though.. both the messenger and email.. strange. Is there anything else I can try to fix that? Or is it basically hopeless?
Thank you though for atleast solving the problems with IE and even if I can not access hotmail or microsoft pages at least i can somewhat surf the net now. Thanks
Pamela

Well… on the "good side" the log is clean now!!!

I'll see if I can help with some of the other problems.

First, run Hijack This! and fix all of the lines that start with "O16", and also have "MSN" in the same line.

These "O16" entries are active-x components loaded on your machine by web sites you visit. If you "fix" them, then go back to that site, they get loaded again.

Fixing all the ones that are associated with MSN will force them all to be loaded again. This will rule out and possibility that one or more has been corrupted, and is the source of your problem.

Reboot after fixing them, and try MSN.

I see you have CookiePatrol running. Is that something new to your machine? I have CookieWall on my machine. It gave me a few problems concerning MSN when I first installed it because MSN requires certain cookies to be allowed on your machine. If CookiePatrol is "killing" these cookies, this can be a problem with MSN.

If all fails, please post the exact error messages you are getting at places you try to visit, but can't, and I will see if I can help.

I'm especially interested with the error you get when you try to update Windows. Without updating to SP1, you have huge vulnerabilities that leave you open to infection time after time.

Here's my list of things to consider to help prevent future infections.

Post back, and let me know. :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

I really do appreciate your help with this. When I goto log into hotmail after i type in my username and password (going thru IE ) I get page can not be displayed. I have tried changing my password and get the same thing, have tried creating a new account and I get the same thing. When I go thru msn explorer and click on my name it attempts about 4 times to sign me in and then tells me it can not connect and to check my internet connections or may be problem with their service (checked service status and they say all systems running stable).I have clicked on forgot password thru msn explorer and after i enter my information it tells me that this service is currently unavailable and to try again later. If I open msn messenger and attempt to sign in i get an error telling me either my password is incorrect or my account is not valid. (Sunday/Monday morning was the last time I was able to sign into msn/hotmail). My kids and husband have accounts also and they receieve the same errors. It appears to ONLY be with msn/hotmail. Our outlook accounts are working as are our yahoo accounts. I also have an ezboard account and it allows me to sign in to that as well as the email. When I goto microsoft update page this is the error I receive : [Error number: 0x800B0001] Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem: I have tried to manually download sp1 and receive the same error. I am (as far as I am aware of) using the main XP account account and should have all administrator priviledges. The cookie patrol came with pest patrol (an adware/spyware removal program) and I have been using it for about a month now with no problems. I have closed the program though and tried without it and continue to receive the same errors . I also reset my active X controls to default, no change. I included microsoft and msn to my "trusted" sites and no change. Sorry this is so long but figure the more info you have the better chance of you helping me figure this out the better. I do have a friend that is willing to crash and reformat my comp this weekend if you feel it would be best to just wipe slate clean. Hate to do it and lose what I have on here but we do depend on the msn accounts to keep in touch with friends and close family members. Pamela
I forgot. I did run hijack this and deleted all instances of "016". I deleted just the ones associated with msn.I rebooted and tried to sign in and got same errors. Opened hijack this again and deleted all the rest of them and rebooted and tried again. Same errors. Pamela
I thought I remembered helping someone in the past with this problem.

I did a little research. Read this.

You don't have the exact same problem, but it's worth a try.

See if that works for you.

Let me know. :)
WOOHOOO it fixed the msn problem.. ok still cant get microsoft update to work though… but whatever that dll command thing was (thru start run) fixed the msn issue. Thank you… Any other suggestions to get around the microsoft issue? Pamela
WHEW!!! One down… One to go… I figured I'd try to get the MSN problem fixed first (hopefully), then move on to the Windows update problem…. I will do some more research on your update problem, and post again this evening, probably around 6PM or later. M68 :)
I fibbed…

Please read this.

It boils down to this:

Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Mssip32.dll, and then click OK two times.
Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Initpki.dll, and then click OK two times.

Give that a whirl (cross your fingers before hand ;) ) and let me know how it goes.

If you are using dialup, I wouldn't start updating to SP1 unless you have several hours (minimum) to spare. I really don't recall how long it took me when I updated.

Another approach might be to start the update before you retire for the evening, and let it run overnight while you sleep.

I still don't recommend updating to SP2 yet (SP1 = "Service Pack 1", SP2 = "Service Pack 2").

M68 :)
I just wanted to let you know that it worked.. THANK YOU!… according to my installation history from microsoft the SP2 pack installation failed.and I only currently have SP1 fully installed on my comp. but I will see what it says about removing any componants(from sp2) that did manage to install. Thank you though. Hopefully this will be my last post LOL. But thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH for taking the time to help get all this straightened out.(and by doing that helping me avoid having to crash and lose everything I have on my hard drive) I will definitely be using spybot and ad-aware regularly to make sure my comp stays free of these programs and will hang on to hijack just incase I start having problems again in the future.. Again thank you so much. Pamela :wavey: :wavey: :) :)
