Hi, I recently did a search on how to remove this adware, but got no such luck. There was a thread about this in April, when I googled the topic, I followed the directions, but I don't seem to have Microsoft antispyware.

I recently did a Norton Antivirus scan many times and could not delete the file gtgth.exe from my computer. It is listed as a file under Adware.Netoptimizer. Located at C:\Program files\fbwqd. When getting the removal tool from Norton's list, it found no such file in my computer, but many times after scanning the file still showed up, rendering the removal tool from Norton useless. I also used Spybot and Spyware Doctor to help get rid of the Adware, but they could not detect the file. When I try to manually delete it, the computer says that I am not authorized to delete the file.

This is really frustrating me out, because I am scared of what this threat might do to my computer. I have Windows XP, and am somewhat computer illiterate, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully someone with the same problem could help with a step-by-step guide? Thank You very much for your time.

~Johnathon

Hi vietbui! I'm 'KotaGuy. Welcome!

If you still require assistance, could you please post a new HijackThis log. It has been a few days since you've posted and something might have changed since then.

Before you do, I need you to update your version of HijackThis. Please uninstall/delete your old version, and download the new version from here. Extract(unzip) it to its own folder, do not run it from the zip or from a Temp directory.
Hi KotaGuy,

Thanks for posting the new log.

Download and install CCleaner. Don't run it yet.

Make sure no files are hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and fix:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pqaskvs] C:\Program Files\Fbwqd\Etgth.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [180ClientStubInstall] "C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNAT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nsr17.tmp"

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\Fbwqd

Search for and delete this file:

C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNAT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nsr17.tmp

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log please.
Hi Again KotaGuy,

Thank You very much for the detailed step-by-step instructions on the removal. The only problem I had was with the "Booting into Safe Mode". The problem was that Selecting Safe Mode was not an option to select. I had three other options: 1) SM-Sony DVD RW DW-U18A, 2) 1st Floppy Drive, and 3) PM-Samsung SP1604N. I also had the option to reboot using default settings, which I did pressing the escape button (Please help me if I did this horribly wrong, or was not supposed to do it at all).

I started the computer up, and did the rest of the steps after according to your outline. I was able to delete all of the required files/folders you told me to except that I could not find the file: C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNAT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\nsr17.tmp

I searched the C drive and my computer, and the search said there were no results in the search for that file.

I hope that I did not make things worse, and I am really grateful for your help and time. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to be doing to help fix my computer problem.

Here is my new log:

KotaGuy, Wow, Thank You for your superb help. I wasn't expecting to hear that the computer was clean. The computer is much faster now. Just for future reference, is it okay to run Norton Internet Security, and Norton System Doctor every time I go online? Or is there any other program(s) I should be running in order to not have this kind of problem again? Also, how often should I run Spybot or Ad-Aware (daily, weekly,…)? Thank You very much again, I will definetely help this site out as much as I can.
Glad I was able to help. You can use the Norton programs if you wish. As for scans… I do my scans weekly.

Now… my All Clean speech :D

To clean up anything that may have been left behind, I suggest doing a couple online virus scans. A couple good ones are Panda ActiveScan and TrendMicro HouseCall. Let them fix anything they find. Reboot between each scan.

If you don't have them, download Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D;. Visit this page for proper configuration of Spybot and Ad-Aware. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

Now that your computer is clean, its a good time to reset your System Restore point. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

I recommend downloading and installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD as well. You can get them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated… so please do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

If you don't have one, I recommend installing a Firewall. I'm sure you've heard of ZoneAlarm.

Check out the links in my sig named How'd I get Infected and Understanding Spyware as well, some good information for you.

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and…

Surf Safe!
Thank You very much again for your help, also all of the information on protecting my computer. One last question I forgot to ask you: 1) When you said to open My Computer, under Tools and then Folder Options, then the View Tab, you said to select "Show hidden files and folders", and to uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. My question is, should I uncheck/check the two accordingly to before I started the removal process? Thank You again.
I susggested that as some infections hide themselves in that way. Unhiding system files makes them appear. If you did unhide files… you can hide them again if you wish. If not you can leave that as it is.
