Hi,
Norton is detecting an Adware.netoptimizer file called Ijplny.exe which it cannot delete. I've run Spybot and it deleted a few items and then came back "no problems found" but Norton is still picking it up. This is my log:
Thanks, Teresa

Hello TeresaD and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Step 1
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step 2
You have a RapidBlaster Infection.

To clean it you will need to download a small program specifically written to clean this type of infection.
  • Please Download RBKiller.exe©
  • CLOSE ALL WINDOWS and Double Click on RBKiller.exe© to scan
  • REBOOT to finish cleaning the infection.
Step 3
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {30A56549-9D5B-4D34-AFA7-440A7F0538A9} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {EE2589EB-7FC8-44DB-A892-573F2C4B41E0} - http://pdf.forbes.com/forbesnews/triggerne…oaderSigned.cab

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 4
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 5
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ap9h4qmo.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\Jznqc << Whole Folder

If you have any problem deleting these files, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 6
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hi Alan,
Thanks a lot for that. I managed to do everything you said but RBKiller didn't actually find anything. I wonder if that's because I was the only one logged on. I've noticed a couple of times recently that Spybot found something if my daughter was logged on. I was to run the scan again on the reboot to clear whatever was left but when I ran the scan again nothing was found. She was downloading Manga or Anime animations and I think she was using BitTorrents; she's a bit more savvy than I am on these things, she'll probably kill me if I have to get rid of something she uses. Anyway, here's my new log, could you let me know if there is anything else I need to do.
Thanks again,
Teresa :wavey:

I couldn't find any information on this file. Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

C:\Program Files\taskmngr\taskmngr.exe

If you still are unsure what this file is, please submit it to the following links for a scan.
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Let us know all of the information you find on that file.
Now this is odd. I can see it on the log and I can see it on the system information start up programs as taskmngr ml1710e but I can't find it in program files, even with hidden files on view. I would innocently have assumed it had something to do with Windows task manager. I just did a full search for taskmngr and nothing was found. Teresa
Symantec mention taskmngr Symantec so it seems to be nasty. Is it enough to delete it or is it doing something terrible every time Windows starts? I'm a wee bit nervous deleting anything without advice.

Thanks,
Teresa :wavey:

Click on this link http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it,.
In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\Program Files\taskmngr\taskmngr.exe

Check the option for "Standard File Kill". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it. Click yes.

If the file is not found, check the option for "Delete on Reboot". Click the button with the red circle with a white X in it. Click 'yes'. When asked to reboot choose 'yes'.

Open HijackThis, run a scan and check the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [taskmngr ml710e] "C:\Program Files\taskmngr\taskmngr.exe"

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked.

Reboot the computer and scan with HijackThis again. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Let us know how the computer is behaving.
Hi,

Your new log is clean.:)

Open Pocket Killbox. Click File < Open !Submit. This will open a folder with the file we just deleted.
Right click on the file and choose send to < Compressed (zipped) Folder. Please email the zipped folder to here so it can be examined and sent to the proper people. Be sure to include a link to this thread in the email.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you get these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
SpywareGuard - Real-time protection from spyware installation attempts
ie-spyad - Puts over 8,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
