here's what happend i was downloading on winmx, when i was through i notice the desktop backround, the icons had been changed and i could not change them back. i ran avast anti virus and spybot s&d, downloaded the updates ran full scans, nothing suspicious was detected  . i still sensed something was wrong so i launched i.e. my homepage was not downloading properly,it was flashing and blinking, typed another web address it did the same thing. i decided to turned the computer off and then turned it back on thinking this would fix the problem. now say what you want about my skill level at understanding a bunch of zero's and one's, this technique has never failed at least until this incident <_< . im pretty sure now i  up. when the computer finished scanning the drives because it detected an abnormal shutdown. to put an end to youre pondering, yes i did it, i clicked the button on the surge protecter because it wouldnt shut off any other way. when it finished the entire backround was one solid color most of the icons were missing, the ones that remained were my documents, my computer, my network places, recycle bin and i.e. it also looked like a throwback to an earlier version of windows not the m.e. it was running before. when i d. click on my computer nothing happends i have to r.click and then click explore then a pop up will come up telling me that because of my security settings prohibeted runing activex controls on this page some items may not be displayed. some items it says, nothing is displayed! i cant click on start i cant launch i.e. or anything by d.clicking. i can only r.click and explore, i r.clicked on i.e and on properties and took a look at my security settings, i have none its all blank. i explored my c: drive in safe mode the following is displayed %thisdirname% and right under it is this %thisdirpath% something tells me this is the root of the problem, i have used all i my skills you know smack it around, kicked it a couple of times and slammed it and it still a useless pile of  to this day.
