I have a problem with my computer OS Windows 98 4.10.1998 Pentium II processor, 352 Mb Ram.
In the Device Manager, under Hard Disk Controllers, the Secondary IDE Controller (dual FIFO) has a yellow mark, and in Disk Drives, the Generic IDE Disk Type 03, has a red mark … the device is not working properly.
I do not know what else to do, I do not have a virus, I did the Ad Aware professional 1.05, Spybot search and distroy, as well as Norton Antivirus 2005, and did not correct anything.
Can you help on this one? The computer takes very, but very long to boot, and sometimes it says that is updating the drives when I boot, but afterwards I have to reboot again, because it does nothing,
I await for your answer, and thanks in advance for your kind help!

Hi miver. The most common cause of your type of problem would be corrupted drivers. Do you have the install disc for Windows 98? If so I can give you the steps to reinstall the drivers you need and we can see if that helps. If not, there are other options but they are allot more involved.
Thanks a lot for your answer.
Unfortunately I do not have the windows 98 disc, because the computer is a Compaq and was installed, and they never gave me the operating system disc.
The computer first came with windows 95, and it had a problem 10 months after, they install (Compaq) windows 98 in the new hard drive, which was defective.
That is why I do not have the restore discs, the only ones I have is from those of the first one which was windows 95.
Maybe there is some other way, you might know.
I await for your kind answer.
Thanks again for your help.
Regards
Michel
It looks like you are running the original version of Window 98. The first thing to do would be to visit Windows Update and apply all available updates. This will take awhile, especially if you are on dialup.
Shut down all other programs before you visit Windows Update as you will need to reboot when it gets done.
You must be running Internet Explorer for this link to work. Click here to go to Windows Update.
Once you have applied all the available updates and rebooted check to see how the drives look. Its possible this process may replace the drivers with newer versions.
